On a weekly basis from September to January, I have been assisting baby ballet classes. This allows me to shadow a teacher and understand how to connect with younger children through teaching, which will help me with my long term goals as I am eager to own my own performing arts school.

Costa Cruise Audition

This audition was held at studio 25 in February. It was my first cruise audition so I was extremely nervous, however our teacher Mr Carpenter was also the choreographer therefore a friendly face made it a bit less intense. I have learnt a lot fro this audition such as my pick up isn't awful however there is still a lot more room for improvement, also being in such a confined space I need to be able to mark but still using all the right lines otherwise I will give off an impression that I am lazy. Also this audition included a Cabriole along with many other ballet steps, I would not have been able to execute this properly if I hadn't had my technical training especially ballet throughout this year. I found the routine a lot easier as I was comfortable with the movement and I also knew how to execute the steps correctly.

Notes to myself after this experience are to use in future auditions:

Not to wear all black for an audition, I need to stand out.
Look more confident and perform more.
Tone up, as to be a dancer I need to look strong.

I will be attending this audition on Monday 11th, as even though I feel I am not ready, I need as much experience as possible, and will hopefully become more comfortable with the audition process.
For the audition I need to go prepared, with all types of dance shoes, make sure I look presentable and try my hardest. If I know that i have tried my hardest and not got the job I won't be disheartened as I know there was nothing else I could do.
This positive thinking will help me for all future auditions not just related to cruise ships. All these experiences are to better myself as a dancer mentally and physically.

After also attending this audition over easter I have gained a bit more knowledge and experience within the audition world.

This audition was very different to Costa Cruises, as it was not as fast paced, however the choreography felt a bit alien to me as it was something I was not used to, therefore this means I need to be taking more classes in different genres to not become complacent and only pick up certain teachers choreography.

I was cut in the first round of this audition, which before this year, I would have let it get to me however I know now that I need to keep trying and not let it defeat me, as I know when I am working hard enough and gained more technique and performance I will hopefully be able to achieve my goal.

I would love to get a job on a cruise ship but I know I am not ready yet, as they all state strong, athletic dancers. Which I need to work harder on, to get wear I need and want to be. I have always wanted to travel, therefore I think it would be an amazing opportunity to book a job on a cruise.

I feel as though the class went well, and there was a good energy in the room, as I was energetic which I believe sets the mood of your classes.

My areas to improve would be to start making up choreography weekly so It becomes more natural and I will gain more movement vocabulary through doing so.

I also need to teach more often as it helps me with my confidence, and I will be therefore be able to teach classes at ease without knowing the students.

Move It Rehearsals

This was my first time being a part of move it, therefore I was quite happy I had a chance to perform.

The rehearsals began with Eric Carpenter, this section consisted of technical Jazz which is the area I feel most confident in. As the rehearsals went on we had finished Mr carpenters section which we had cleaned, for when we started in Jamie's rehearsals.

We took the section we had done with Mr Carpenter and performed it to Jamie, and he took parts he felt he could incorporate into his own ideas. The process went well but it could have been a lot sharper and more organised as a whole.

When we started this routine I thought it would be a lot more technical Jazz, however it ended up being more Jazz funk, which was good, as I was able to work on something a bit more out of my comfort zone.

There were areas of the routine that I struggled with, however I was determined to stay in the piece and did not want to let myself down. Therefore I was constantly trying to perfect my lines, technique and style.

This process has helped me understand what it would be like to be rehearsing with a professional company, the speed they teach you the routines and the content you have to remember is testing my retention skills and my intelligence as a dancer.

I was excited about this performance as I haven't performed much throughout these past three years. However for me the biggest challenge was not being able to have a tech run, therefore we could not go through the spacing on stage before the actual performance.

I realised I was a lot more aware of the space and the other dancers near me, as i was nervous. This has given me more insight on what it will be like to perform live or last minute changing of theatres or stages as you should always be prepared for change and be able to adapt.

I felt good on stage however I was constantly worrying I wasn't executing everything correctly therefore I felt as though my performance lacked quite a lot. I need to start concentrating on my performance more in class as I do not do many shows any more so I am losing my performance skills.

Since September I think my musicality has got a lot better as before hand I used to struggle listening to the beats Jamie would pick up on as he is very intricate. I have worked harder and I am listening to the beats more therefore feel as though I am dancing with a lot more musicality and rhythm.

Every Thursday we have masterclasses with dancers/choreographers from all around the world coming to teach us.

I have been attending these as I think it is beneficial for me to try other styles out to understand more a bout dance as a whole. There have been a few which I haven't really liked but only because I am not used to the style but I need to get used to this situation because if I am on a job I won't have a say on the choreography, you have to do what they want as you are working for them.

Choreographers who have taught me during this year:

Leroy Curwood
Valentina Stakkeland
Candace Brown
Tobias Ellehammer
Jason Nguyen
Viki Chebron

All these different styles have improved my dance ability as a whole as I am a lot more eager to try new things and not be embarrassed about looking rubbish as if I carry on taking these classes I will improve and will see how much i have progressed.

LEROY CURWOOD

This is a piece of his choreography that he taught us in our masterclass, however I do not have a video of our class. I appreciate his work a lot as he isn't just focused on one style, he is technically trained and has studied a variety of other styles. He performed in "oliver" at the age of 12 and then moved on to music videos and also co choreographed the Australian 'So you think you can dance." (Diambra.se, 2014)

I used to teach at an arts school. Where I taught tap and modern to young adults with special needs, at the beginning I thought it would be very hard to be able to communicate with them.
However I realised how patient i can be, and I love working with them and putting a smile on their faces. This has helped me believe in myself as if it is something you love then why let anything stop you.

It has also improved my own tap dancing skills as sometimes you lose the foundations or forget to practise things when you think you have mastered them, therefore it helped me build a stronger tap foundation and also how to teach tap to make it more simple, as it is a hard style to pick up especially for beginners. My main challenge being peoples different abilities and ages, therefore I had to remain at a pace everyone could keep up with.

Currently I will be graduating this year from Shockout, my training at Shockout has been very intense and I have gained a lot more technique and strength. This is all setting me up for my short term goals which one is to perform on a cruise ship or travelling around touring of some sort.

All the training we do with Mr Carpenter and Mr Needham sets me up for this as, they are both technical teachers however have very different styles, Mr Carpenter uses a lot more Matt Mattox techniques, were as Mr Needham uses Luigi technique which concentrates on perfecting our foundations and making sure alignments are all strong and correct. This is vital for my short term goals as it also helps me understand other choreographers works and not train in one style or way of teaching and then struggle to retain another persons choreography.

My other short term goal would be to perform in West Side Story as when I was 15 I took part in a small theatre company production, and I was one of six dancers to perform on the Liverpool Empire's stage in West Side Story. I love all the songs and the style of the show and routines are amazing, to do this I need to focus more on my technique classes and work to my fullest, I also need to work on my style as to aim for this I cannot be a plain dancer, there has to be something unique for me to stand out in the audition process. This is what I am currently learning from and taking information about audition techniques throughout the cruise ship auditions I am currently attending.

My long term goals for after my performance career would be to open up a performing arts school, as this is something I have always aspired to do, as I have been to stage schools from young. I would like to teach jazz myself and have other teachers for the other areas of the arts. Relating back to my training, I would use the Luigi Technique that we have studied for 2years, therefore I feel as though I could pass the knowledge I have gained from his classes to other students, as it breaks the foundations down, and makes sure for when you are executing more complex movements that your body is in the correct alignment.

The classes I have taught and that I am currently teaching are working towards my long term goal, as I am understanding how to speak to different ages to help them understand certain aspects of the movements and taking corrections. To work on this I need to gain more confidence throughout my training and performance years as I need to pass this on to the students, as every one needs a sort of guidance as they are finding themselves as a person and performer.

"Believe in yourself! Her work was so unique, I hadn't taken many classes this, therefore it was a challenge however the vibe she created was really uplifting and it allowed me to feel more confident within the class. If I were to take this class again I would stand at the front of the room to feel more involved as I tend to put myself at the back as I become defeated, these are the steps I need to take to become more confident as a dancer, which is my biggest down fall.

This piece is so clean and the execution of every movement is perfectly timed and stylised.
This piece is full has got so much vocabulary involved in the choreography, which makes me realise that choreographing does make you a better dancer, as you also perfect the movements on your own body and you can experiment and better yourself.

My confidence lacks overall in dance, sometimes it overtakes everything and thats all I focus on throughout the class. This is going to let me down as it already is, as I will go a while feeling more confident and then one day I feel as though I've gone back to square one again, and I upset myself and annoy people around me. I need to be able to control my thoughts, however it is mentally testing me constantly as I do struggle. I saw this quote from Venus Williams (2016) "I don't focus on what I'm up against. I focus on my goals and I try to ignore the rest." I believe in this as it is how I try and keep my self positive when I think its my body and my life and therefore I should always concentrate on myself and want the best and not let mysef down.

We are going to begin working towards our end of year show, which I will be able to incorporate all of the styles and using transferable skills throughout the different routines as every style of dance comes from all areas of your foundations. All my ballet work has made me a lot more discipled and has improved my placement and footwork, therefore my Jazz has also improved as I am focusing more on my inside leg muscles and my core, I can also transfer this onto my commercial work as I will be able to attack with precision, all my isolations and movements.
Dancing makes people natural leaders, as well as maintaining discipline and a lot more creative with ideas. It also makes you able to work as a team (Ailes, 2015), for example; "A good corps de ballet must work as a very good team, as they tend to do the same choreography but in unison or making complicated patterns at the same time." (Hub, 2016)

All my skills and knowledge I have gained throughout my training, will help me in my showcase as I have gained a lot more technique and style. I aim to improve a lot more and taking skills I have learnt from masterclasses to create a more unique style which will hopefully make me stand out more to the audience.

I learnt from the Move It piece that I needed to perform more, therefore I aim to improve this by performing in my classes to gain more confidence and to become more comfortable that it will feel natural. I can also relate everything I learn and improve here to my personal development plan as It is all helping me to achieve my goals.

"Start-up success is not a consequence of good genes or being in the right place at the right time. Success can be engineered by following the right process, which means it can be learned, which means it can be taught."(Ries, 2016)

I have always been influenced by the works of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse as all their work was so pure. From a young age I have always wanted to perform in their work. 'Singin' in the rain' has always been one of my favourite musicals along side Jerome Robbins' Choreography of 'West Side Story' as the music is effective and the dancing has a sense of emotion and feeling and creates an amazing atmosphere. The performance always tells the story and their movements are so precise you cannot fault. As one of my goals is to be in 'West Side Story' I aim to learn as much as possible about Jerome Robbins as the more you know about the work, and show how interested you are and you know what they are looking for the better chance I have of achieving this goal.

This audition was very last minute as it was being held at studio 25, therefore we were asked to audition without any preparation, I was very nervous as I wasn't used to not being prepared.
We were asked to show our catwalk one by one, which I wasn't committing to 100& as I didn't feel very confident. I felt as though I was the bigger girl in the room and I let it affect me too much so therefore I didn't try my hardest.

I realised throughout this audition that my pick up has improved however it has made me want to work more on my confidence throughout the rest of this year. This audition has given me more information on the industry and I can retain the constructive criticism and use it to my advantage in other auditions and during class work.
