War Camp Community Service was a service organization which set out to raise morale and organize recreational activities for the American troops.

To me, community service is a vital part of any community. It is important to know the problems that your community is facing and how you can help alleviate them and support other members in your community. War Camp Community Service was particularly focused on raising the morale of American soldiers, but there are a variety of different service opportunities.

Mary Todd Lincoln married Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, in 1842. Although she suffered from serious mental health issues after her husband's assassination, Mary continued to be an avid supporter for the union.

I believe that leadership can be exhibited in many different ways. Although Mary Todd Lincoln is an odd choice for an example of leadership, I chose to use Mary to highlight that leadership can appear differently in each person. Mary grew up in a rich southern family who was firmly against the Union. Instead of conforming to her family expectations, Mary became a relentless supporter for the Union.

The Collinwood Community Center is a community center located just outside of Cleveland Ohio in the Collinwood neighborhood.

In the early 1970's, a demographic change led to racial conflicts in Collinwood. Collinwood gained national attention in the 1970's during the Cleveland gang war, which eventually required the presence of the federal organized crime task force. The Collinwood Community Center works to strengthen community ties and build relationships between citizens. It also offers a space where members of the community can all feel welcomed and supported. To me, community building is all about creating a fundamental foundation where every member of the community can feel supported.

Bill Gates is the co-founder of Microsoft.

My definition of scholarship is knowledge gained from studying and learning, as well as learning from real life experiences. I chose Bill Gates to represent scholarship because he put hours of hard work and effort into learning computer programing, a subject in which he was naturally gifted and interested in. He used his knowledge of computer programming to build Microsoft and became the youngest billionaire in the world. With this money, Bill Gates and his wife started the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation which is well known for helping reduced poverty and increase healthcare.

Susette LaFlesche Tibbles (1854-1903) was a Native American rights advocate who gained fame from publicly speaking about the lack of rights Native American tribes had. She worked tirelessly on improving the living conditions on reservations and she worked as an interpreter in court cases that Native Americans brought against the federal government.

I chose this artifact because Tibbles represents the importance of civic engagement and advocacy in society. Although citizenship is often described as the legal status of an individual, I believe that citizenship is much more complex and takes into account multiple different components, such as being an active and contributive member of society. Anyone can be a citizen of a country, but in my opinion, citizenship is a consistent effort to improve the community.
