The author doesn't say whether other people are able to lie, but what we know is that Jonas can. Even though the community teaches you when you grow up not to lie, now Jonas can. This quote is important because it shows how important Jonas’ job is to the community as well as how secretive it is. They talked about how important it is, but the instructions in his folder practically says how secretive it is too. In the real world people lie just about everyday no matter how big or small it is. We are told not to lie, but we all do it. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about the community because why is this job so important and have to be so secretive. Most of the other jobs are open and you are told what they are. He does not know what this means and he is confused and shocked. On page 69 it says “Jonas was stunned. What would happen to his friendships?”
In other words, when he read the list of rules, he was surprised because none of these things would be allowed in the regular community rules.
The author is trying to make us see that this job is extremely important, enough to have all of these rules that would otherwise be breaking the regular ones. He can’t even say anything to his family or friends, not even the elders.
This quote is important because he has a very important job, one of the most important jobs in the entire community. Only one person has it, and he was specially selected. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about the community and elders. Why would they tell him to lie, even to the elders? This story had a significant impact on my thinking about people lying. The fact that Jonas wasn’t even ready to think about the possibility of him lying shows me this. It was a rule that was applied from the beginning. “No lying”. This lead Jonas to think if anyone else was given the permission to lie. And if his parents had ever lied. The author is trying to make us see that this rule is a very important rule and that it will come back later on. Whether Jonas will have to lie to protect himself or someone he cares about, or maybe it will give Jonas a whole new perspective on the world. To be paranoid about if anyone is lying to him especially if he is allowed to ask any questions he find necessary. The passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how much lying we do in the real world. An average person tells two to three lies in a ten minute conversation. That’s about 288 lies a day. Whereas in Jonas’ world, they were not allowed to say one. This can also be apply to the world because as a child, you are told to never lie. It was bad and mean. It could lead to more trouble than just telling the truth. But as you grow older, it seems that lying is sometimes important in certain situations. Making it so that Jonas’ “you may lie” rule, a subject on just growing up. Although, it could also be there to show that lying is mostly bad and even if you are given the chance, you should not take it. This quote means that giving someone permission to lie is a big deal, because giving permission to lie is like saying you can lie without getting into trouble. It means he can tell anyone and everyone something that is not true just to keep the truth/real answer with himself. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about whether lying is good or bad. Lying is something everyone instantly thinks is bad but what if you need to lie to keep others safe, what if you need to lie to keep the secret truth from spreading. Jonas is allowed to lie for his sake of training and part of his job as becoming Receiver. So he is allowed to lie and stretch the truth only when necessary and seems to be at the right time. The Receiver says this seriously, he is honest in allowing Jonas to lie in his sake of privacy. The author is making us see that it is only good to pass a lie in necessary circumstances. This quote is important because it reveals that even in a perfect world or community. Not everything goes as planned. Some real world applications are if you and someone or your family members get in trouble, you or them take the blame and take full responsibility for the mistake that was made. The quote changed my thinking not about that I can lie, but that lying is only okay when it’s 100% necessary and not to just cover something up that isn’t very bad because then you are untrustworthy.

This is written for Jonas. In other words Chief Elder wanted to inform Jonas that this position may require Jonas to tell lies. Chief Elder wanted him to know that lying is allowed. I feel that the author is trying to make us see that Jonas is not a liar. And he isn’t very comfortable with lying because of the way he was raised. So this may be a bigger deal than it needs to be. This had a significant impact on my thinking about Jonas because the book says “He had been trained since earliest childhood, since his earliest learning of language, not to lie” (Lowry 70). This makes me think that Jonas may not be able to do the job because he wasn’t raised to lie to other people. This connects to the real world when people want to tell the truth about everything, even if it makes things worse.

I infer the theme lies creates power because if one person lies the others don’t know and this creates power and chaos. This quote means to me that lying is a power that may be good or bad, but we need to control it before it gets out of hand. In our world we don’t know who is telling the truth or not. All we know is we can try to trust others, but they have the choice to tell the truth or lie and it gives them the power.

I think this quote reveals that the job of the receiver is far different from any other job he could’ve been assigned. I think this quote is foreshadowing a possible future event that could happen farther into the story, maybe Jonas will be required to lie to someone about something. I see this idea in the world as something very common, because for some people, lying is like breathing, they do it all the time.

The quote is important because it make Jonas think about how his relationships with his friends and family would be affected, along with how his life would change. He grew up learning a certain way to do things and then he is told to ignore some of it because of a job he was selected for. I see this in the real world often with families and friends.
