A. What is the problem and what are the root causes of the problem?

The main problem about immigration is that thousands of immigrants come from Central and South American countries come into America illegally. A couple examples of coming across the border illegally are sneaking across, climbing over the wall or not going through inspection at a port. Also, some immigrants come over to America to get jobs and send money back to their home country. Since many illegal immigrants sneak over the border, the president wants to put a wall up in some places to slow them down. This thought has caused a lot of tension and debating in our government. Many people say that there is a link between illegal immigration and some terrorism in our country. This is because when some illegal immigrants come into the US, they kill people in our country. Lastly, when immigrants come to a port at the border to be inspected, (the legal way to enter the US) there can be too many to inspect in a less than a day and thousands of people have to be kept at the border. When this happens, the living conditions can be bad. People are in tight, unsanitary quarters and they can be kept there for weeks before crossing. The problem is mostly illegal immigration, but some of it comes from legal immigration too.

C. Why should the rest of the world be concerned about this issue?

The US has the highest immigration rate in the world. Germany has the second highest rate, but the difference is by more than 34 million immigrants! Immigrants come to Germany for the same reason many people come to the US: wealth and job opportunities. The US is the most generous country when it comes to immigration. Germany tries to make it simple for people to get into their country, but they aren’t as generous as us. In order to come into Germany, immigrants must pass inspection, like they would do at the US, but they have to go through a building instead of a port to enter. When immigrants pass inspection, they are sent into the US to live free lives, but it’s a different case in Germany. Any non-EU citizen immigrating into Germany will be permitted to work if they have qualified training. This is why the rest of the world should be concerned about immigration in the U.S.

D. What is currently being done to address this problem?

There are any things to address this problem. Some have already been put to action, others are still in the making. I have mentioned this before, but the president's main solution is to build a wall across the majority of the border. It won’t stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border, (many immigrants just climb over the wall) but it will slow them down and make it more easier for them to be caught crossing illegally. For the past couple years the president has also sent Border Patrol agents to watch the border and give inspections for legal immigrants at ports. Ports have been used for as long as Border Patrol has been at the border. There are more Border Patrol Agents at ports combined than there are anywhere else on the border. The ports are mainly located near rivers. This causes an obstacle for the immigrants and forces them to stop for a while. This then allows Border Patrol agents to spot the immigrants and inspect them. The legal immigration process has also been modernized. There has always been inspection, but it was a lot more simple and very easy to pass. We have created a more thorough inspection to make sure we are being cautious and letting the right people in. People are integrating workforces for immigrants to allow them to work. Many solutions have been put into action to help make immigration easier.

Dear Journal,

Today has probably been the best day of my life! We have come to the US from our country, Guatemala. We came here because the US so my parents could get better jobs and because the US is such a wealthy country and our family could be more well-supported. My mom, dad, my sister and I walked around 3 miles from where we slept to a port near a river called the Rio Grande. When we arrived at the port, a Border Patrol agent greeted us and he inspected us. He checked our bags to make sure we weren’t carrying anything illegal. He also checked us to make sure there wasn’t anything illegal in our clothes or pockets. Around 20 minutes later he said we were free to enter the US. We were overjoyed that we weren’t turned back and that we had finally entered the US. Now we are going to set up camp and tomorrow, being our journey in the US! I’ll write to you soon.

Yours,

Susana

B. How has the problem affected the community directly?

Immigration can affect people in several ways. For people trying to cross the border illegally, on average there are 11,000 - 22,000 Border Patrol agents monitoring it, and it’s very difficult to cross without being caught. On the other hand, those who seek asylum or want to enter the US legally, are inspected and if they pass they are sent into the US. Once again, since the president wants to put a wall on the majority of the border, this doesn’t necessarily stop people from crossing, but it slows them down and makes it easier for them to be caught. The greatest struggle is if you don’t pass inspection at a port, you are sent back to your home country. Also, if immigrants cross the border illegally and are caught, they will also be sent back to their home country. If people can’t cross the border and don’t/ can’t go back to their country, they have to stay in Mexico. Many families are separated at the border when certain people in that family can cross and others can’t. This is how immigration can affect the community.
