PL gives students ownership in their learning. When they care about what they are learning about, they will learn more. When they feel important, they will care about others.

Personalized Learning is probably what is best for students here at Flippen BUT I think we are losing our way. We have so many trainings and so often it is all starting to become a blur. We are expected to have some level of expertise to implement Personalized learning in the classroom and we have become experts on NOTHING at this point.
Yes, I think our students will benefit from Personalized Learning... when our teachers can wrap their brains around it before it morphs again....
I think it is also important to look at our younger students and how they are coming to us. We have to get the skills to these younger students before we can expect "real world " application and "student agency". Some of these kids come with nothing and the numbers are high and unmanageable.
I am not giving up... I will keep trying. Please let us go see other teachers who are doing this the way it should be done. I need to see it....

It would be great if we could buy the PL Package on Teacher Pay Teacher, but that isn't personalized. We should all be learning and growing in this PROCESS. There is no perfect way or right way to do PL. Just like we tell the kids - try it, see what worked and didn't work, revise, and try again.

LHq

I love the idea of personalized learning! It is a great way to reach all students. Every student we encounter has come from a diffferent background, have different ideas of what school should be, have different experiences, learn in different ways and find different things to be entertaining. Although it can be a difficult process for teacher, we have to reach each and every student. It is our job and duty. Personalized learning also allows us to help create a positive learning enviornment. My experience last year showed me how happier, involved and excited students can feel about learning. We will always have set backs, but we need to help our students as much as possible. We can even learn from our students. I think many of us are getting lost in the expectations and forgetting that it is okay to mess up. We learn from it each time and it helps us grow. We also have to be patient with our students through process. I think that after as we get better with PL, so will our students. I think this will ultimately be what is best for our students at FLES we just have to stay encouraged and work with our students, so we can better prepare them for the future.

As I read it on paper, Personalized Learning is a no-brainer to me. We all do better, get more out of what we are learning if we see the validity in it. This is no different for our students. My concern comes during this first year of implementation for me. I want to make sure that my students are mastering the standards needed. I just want to make sure that I am doing what is best for my students.

Personalized Learning motivates students and teaches them to set goals and work to complete them. They enjoy having choices. Students can learn at their own pace as well as, receive enrichment from and create with technology. Technology frees the teacher to work with those who are working more slowly or need more direct, explicit instruction.

I think that if we all give PL a real chance this will be a great learning experience for our students. I feel like part of the problem is that there are no clear right or wrong answers when questions are asked about what needs to be completed. I think that PL will give teachers the "freedom" to get creative with the way they deliver lessons to the students. PL allows teachers to find out what really helps each student in the class learn. (Set things to music, have them do a news broadcast for the grade level/school) If we cookie cut how we teach then we miss the students that "slip through" the gaps we create. The future is forever changing and we have to change teaching methods to match....Parents want what is best for their children and I am sure if we present the ideas of PL to the strengths we all have then parents will be on board.

The students who thrive in this type of environment are soaring and rising above expectations, but with the students who need the schedules and who lack motivation, they are drowning and it is not fair to them. It worries me that when someone walks in my room and sees how regimented their activities are that I be looked down upon even though THIS is how they learn best and that makes it personalized to them.

I think that most of the teachers who are really giving Personalized Learning a fair shot are seeing the benefits. Not that personalized learning fixes everything, but we are seeing growth. Unfortunately, I think there are still some teachers that do not agree with what we have planned, so instead of trying they are sticking with previous teaching styles and complaining that PL does not work. If we are expecting our students to adapt and work harder we have to set the same expectations for ourselves.

PL has shown an overall school perspective. We can see around us who has embraced the opportunity to implement creative methods of learning with students. Students enjoy voice and choice and they have really stepped up to know more about their performance and learning targets. Students do want to know where they are and where they need to go. It is about time we offered them this information. After all, they are the ones responsible for graduating, not their parents and not us. We just need to provide them the tools to do it!

I agree with the person who says that PL is a no-brainer in terms of making the students more successful and aware of what, why, and how they are learning. But I too am concerned about the students who were already struggling and are now taking on student agency. They are the ones who I feel will continue to be left behind while trying to feel their way through their own PL process and master skills they need to be successful at a higher level. They need a lot of guidance as to what, why, and how they learn.

I think that personalized learning is great for students. It allows them to be THEIR BEST AT THEIR PACE! Many kids in the past have fallen short not because of not knowing but not knowing at the pace the teacher thought he/she should. On the flip side, many students have been held back (if you will). Although they were ready to move on, again, the teacher determined the pace. Kids are excited about being able to go deeper or even move on. Students enjoy choice and voice. Is it harder and more work for teachers? Of course it is!!!! However, in the long run, it is BEST FOR EVERY STUDENT!

Honestly, I feel a little disconnected because some of us are not able to be a part of the planning and discussion meetings during plan times. I feel like I'm really missing out and am not able to help support teachers and students as effectively as I would like to as it relates to personalized learning. With that being said, I do think that personalized learning is best for students. Relevant, authentic learning and student agency make learning more meaningful. Allowing students the flexibility to work at their own pace and show mastery in different ways allow students to take ownership of their learning.
