How I Learn To Teach Kids by Audrey Novita

Warming Up

I'll admit i'm not that good with handling kids, especially when they're cranky. Though, this school year i experienced something different, i had the incredible opportunity to teach kids as part of a school program. Me and my team, we firstly went to a school in Cikande, Walking into the classroom, the children greeted us with their bright smiles and curious eyes, and the teachers working there were also delighted that we came. Me and my team introduced ourselves, a few of the children were shy at first, but they slowly loosened up. We started the lesson with a fun icebreaker, as we played and sang together, laughter filled the room. We then transitioned into the main activities, which included counting numbers and learning english. I saw the children actually engaging with the lesson, which felt really rewarding, though, i didn't feel satisfied with myself. Of course i'm thankful that i got the opportunity, and i'm glad we got to help people. But it was a well enough teaching experience at best. Nothing special, as i expected.

The Teaching Process

After two days, we moved on to the next school, which uncoincidentally was the school where my little brother went too. I mostly taught them mandarin, since they already knew the basics, it's easier for me to explain the materials to them. It went extremely well, the children were really excited and eager to learn. During the lessons, the kids were engaging quite well with the lesson and they learned quite a lot however one kid stood out amongst the rest. There was one kid and he was quite loud however he was also extremely eager to learn more about mandarin. Even though he was getting on my nerves quite a bit with his rowdy attitude, he still paid attention to the lesson and learned a bit and at the end of the day, he was very fun to teach. The rest of the kids were also fun and really cheerful and they paid attention quite well without staying too quiet while also engaging in the lesson.

What I Realized

During my trip, I realized a lot of things and how grateful I am for it. I have come so far and learned a lot and with God's blessing and help, I am able to share that love with other kids so that they can grow up and share God's love too. I realized how grateful I am to be in the life I am now with the family I have right now. Despite the challenges I face in my life, I am still grateful that I am able to share God's love and blessing with many others so that they can experience it too. God has helped to bless me and my group along with the other groups on this mission trip so that we were able to do this trip and help people successfully and safely without much challenges. I was also able to learn how to handle kids despite their rowdy and cranky attitude and I am grateful God has given me this chance to help these kids experience God's love.
