The name of this word comes from the word “gangurru” which was used by the Guuga Yimithir citizens of Far North Queensland. An English traveler James Cook first documented the word as “kangaroo” or “kanguru” in the year 1770. The word “kangaroo” was supposedly meant to mean “ I don’t understand you”. Furthermore, its scientific name is Osphranter rufus. Last, the males are called “boomers”, the females “blue flyers” because of the blue-grey black fur they have and the babies are called “Joeys”.

Red kangaroos are herbivores, meaning they eat grass and other plants. Unlike other herbivores the red kangaroos have a different stomach. Kangaroos only have a single chambered stomach which means their stomach doesn’t allow a full digestion of food. For this reason a kangaroo would throw up to chew it before swallowing again. Kangaroos play a crucial part in the animal food chain. In their role as prey, kangaroos offer an outstanding protein source to organisms that hunt them as food. Organisms that hunt red kangaroos are dingos, humans and wedge-tailed eagles

Red kangaroos reproduce sexually. The females shed an egg from their ovary and it’s carried down the fallopian tube where, if it encounters the sperm, the egg is fertilised and then it implants itself in the wall of its mother’s uterus. The joey then uses its sense of smell to lead its way to the mom’s pouch pulling itself along using its sharp claws. Once it gets there it will remain there for at least another 8 months. It will stay there for 8 months because it cant fend for itself, the pouch is like a nursing station for it. The life span of a red kangaroo is up to 22 years. The life cycle of a red kangaroo is, birth: when they are born, joeys are only 2 grams, neonate: this is the stage where they use their sense of smell to lead them to their mother’s pouch, pouch: it is when the joey is in the pouch and is nursing on the mom for anther 8 months, joey: which is when the baby is old enough to get out the mothers uterus and starts being independent at about 8-10 months, adolescent: in adolescence males mature at 2-3 years old and females mature at 2 years old, this stage is when the joey is independent, kangaroo: this is when the kangaroo is a fully grown adult.
