My college professor told me & some friends about it. We got into the car and drove 14 hrs from NY to join hundreds of women - gay, straight, bi - to celebrate womyn's music and womyn's experiences. The festival was born during the 1st wave of feminism in the 1970s. Well intentioned but received criticism over the years as it claimed to be a "womyn-born" space & therefore unaccepting of transgendered women (which I didn't know until I saw protesters on arrival). It closed in 2015 after drawing criticism from the Human Rights Campaign because it needed to evolve and be more inclusive in its mission & accept transgendered women. I was crushed when I heard of its closing because there was so much good associated with it, but understood that oppression takes many forms, even within the LGBTQ community. Being an ally isn't easy. It requires constant growth & reflection. If we are allies, we must be allies for everyone, not some. We can't be allies for lesbians but not transgendered women. We must actively denounce oppression in all its forms or else we are contributing to it. So find your Michfest space, and learn things. Talk to people who aren't like you. Seek to understand. Evolve. Then do even better things, and become a better ally. And go to PRIDE FEST in a city near you. It's a HOOT!
