Maurice and His Dictionary by Cary Fagan is a graphic novel and true story about the author's father, Maurice. Maurice and his family are fleeing their home and end up in a refugee camp. Even in the camp, Maurice is focused on continuing his education and achieving his goal of becoming a lawyer so that he can one day help others. The author's note at the end of the story also contains real photographs of the family, which I think would help students connect the characters to actual people. Maurice's story can help students learn about empathy, resilience, and determination.

Annet's family and their neighbors help the family escape to Sweden on a boat by standing at their doors and whispering the directions to the boat as the Jewish family travels through town. The Whispering Town encompasses many SEL competencies such as empathy, when it is necessary to take risks, and standing up for what you believe in. Students can explore the perspectives and fearful feelings of Anett and her family as well as the Jewish family.

The Wren and the Sparrow by J. Patrick Lewis is a fictional story inspired by the horrible events that occurred in the Lodz Ghetto in 1940. The story shows how people in the ghettos and concentration camps used songs and music to express themselves as well as cope with the inhumane conditions in which they were living in. This book can be used to teach SEL coping skills, character traits and motivations, and understanding the theme of a story while also allowing students to gain a deeper insight into the lives of Holocaust victims.

When the Nazi's entered Copenhagen, Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be part of the family. In the novel, Annemarie is asked to face danger in order to save her best friend's life.

The I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis are an engaging and accessible way for students to learn about historic events. This book is #9 in the series and features two siblings, Max and Zena, who escaped a Jewish ghetto and cross paths with three young Jewish Partisans. In the story, Max and Zena's father was also arrested and they fear that they will never see him again, which is an aspect of the text that some students will be able to relate to. This text will also allow students to explore a lesser-known aspect of the Holocaust - the Jewish Partisans who fought against the Nazis from secret hideouts. Students will be able to take on the perspective of and empathize with the young children facing terrifying challenges in this novel.
