The National Governing Body for Netball in England is called England Netball. They have the responsibility of creating and enforcing rules and regulations for the sport, as well as promoting its development across all levels, from grassroots to international competitions. Additionally, they are responsible for disciplinary actions, such as bans and fines, for elite-level players.

Main Rules in Netball

Many rules in netball help separate the sport from other ball games such as Basketball. For example,

. You can't move with the ball, once you have the ball in your possession you have to pivot on one foot and pass the ball on. If you move with the ball that is called footwork

. You can only keep hold of the ball for 3 seconds or less, if you hold the ball for longer the other team gains possession of the ball and it is classed as a 'held ball'

. If the ball is dropped out of your hands and you pick it up that is called 'replayed ball' and that is not allowed. This will then allow the other team to take the ball into their possession.

. When marking in Netball you have to be at least 3 feet away from the opposing player otherwise you get fouled and have to stand next to the player whilst they take their next pass.

. The offside rule is also very simple, if a player such as Center went into the shooting D then that would allow the opposing team to take a free pass from the same area.

Officials and what they do in netball

In netball, there are different officials for the game such as two umpires, two scorekeepers and timekeepers officiating.

Umpires, scorekeepers and timekeepers all have different roles to ensure that the game runs smoothly and efficiently.

The Umpire's role in a game of Netball is to ensure the game is played correctly and there are no bends in the rules. Umpires also have to make decisions such as violations and fouls meaning they have to watch the game at all times to ensure the game is not unfair. This also links to the umpires having to be unbiased during the game to create a more enjoyable match, whether that is a friendly game of Netball or a more competitive style. There are normally two umpires that officiate the game which stand on either side of the goal posts.

The role of a scorekeeper ensures that the game is scored correctly and fair. They have to ensure that they score the game accurately and maintain that throughout the whole 4 quarters.

The timekeeper plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the game. They are responsible for timing the quarters with precision and notifying the umpires at the end of each quarter to avoid any further gameplay. They can also confidently manage any stops that occur during the game, allowing the gameplay to continue.

All the officials who take part in helping the game of Netball run smoothly ensure the game includes fair play and good sportsmanship throughout. They ensure the game is enjoyable for both sides of the team and also maintain the unity of the sport.

There are not many different pieces of technology used in Netball. However, the use of instant replay technology is used to help the officials make quick and easy decisions that are accurate. The use of instant replay technology is that it can help when needing to make decisions over a foul or an out-of-bounds ball. This means that there is no room for arguments against the umpire as there is video evidence that can back them up.

Additionally, when playing a more professional and competitive match of Netball, the officials may also wear headpieces which allow them to communicate with each other throughout the game allowing easier access to decision making which will overall help the flow of the match.

Gamesmanship in netball

Gamesmanship is the act of winning through clever, but not technically illegal tactics within the sport.

An example of gamesmanship in netball would be time-wasting, this not only buys time for the team if they are winning it also allows the team to catch a breath and to try and make the opposing team lose the momentum they currently have. They could take time tying shoelaces, taking time to return the ball to the court or actions which may try to lose the flow of the game for the opposition.
