Montag had gone to a house to start a fire. When he had got there the woman was still there, the police hadn't come to get her. After trying to get her out of the house, and her refusing, she had gotten a kitchen match and had lit it on her porch, sending the whole house up in flames. When Montag had gotten home Mildred had already been in bed. Montag had asked her if she knew what had happened to Clarisse. She had told him that she was pretty sure she had been hit by a car and had been killed. Also she told him about how her family had moved away. That night the Hound had been on his lawn. The next morning he had woke up with the chills and a fever. Mildred couldn't believe it, he had been fine last night.

So far in the story we have figured out that Montag is intrigued by Clarisse. We have also learned that you can get your house burnt down if you have a book in your house. Now for the fireman, if someone knows he took a book then he has twenty-four hours to burn it himself. If he doesn't complete the task then the other fireman handle it. Also we have learned that Clarisse waits every day on her lawn for Montag to get home. They would then talk about the world and themselves. Eventually Montag had realised that Clarisse had stopped waiting for him. Montag had asked his wife about her not being there. She had said that she had died. Montag hadn't been IN love with his wife. Clarisse had made him realise this. He didn't realise that everyday on his way home he had been looking and hoping that Clarisse would be there, as always, waiting for him.
