This book is about Little Blue, who lives with his blue parents, and Little Yellow, who lives with his yellow parents. Little Blue and Little Yellow are best friends who play together and go to school together. One day Little Blue cannot find his friend, Little Yellow. When they do see each other, they're so happy that they hug, but something happens. They turn green! When they go home their parents do not recognize them and become upset. He received the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was a four-time Caldecott Honor Winner—for Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. Little Blue and Little Yellow was his first book and was written on a train ride, for his grandchildren. In the book, the two main characters are two different colors, yet they are still best friends. They also go to school with children of many different colors. Initially their parents do not recognize them because they became a different color, green. This color was not acceptable to the parents until they realize what had happened.
