1) I feel like it is referring to the fact that all his art is meant to have a "funny" quality to it.

2) This brought me a question. Does artwork have to be "good" in a way where it looks complicated like a painting? Or can artwork be considered good if there is really nothing to it except the fact that everyone is talking about it?

3) Although I think this piece is not good. I have to admit that what this artist has done by making such a weird piece if kind of smart. When I looked at it the first time I thought what is this? But thats exactly what makes it so famous, because everyone tells each other about this weird piece of artwork they saw.

"Comedian" eludes to the inflated art market and the rich population that tends to participate in it. It also seems to poke at the idea of what really makes something art. It also pokes at our desire for art to be fun. Catalan has a history of making pieces of art that poke at viewers and consumers in similar ways. Is the piece of art the banana or the certificate?

This video makes me think that a piece of art is made art by the meaning behind it, or the lack thereof. A lack of meaning can really spark so much thought. I think it all comes down to creativity. Either the creativity that goes into the piece of the creativity the piece sparks.

This was a good piece of art. A lot of meaning went into the creation of the piece and the piece sparks a lot of thought and creativity upon viewers.

The only interesting part about this piece of so called "art" is that a banana is not something you normally see taped to a wall.

The work makes me think about why art can be priced so high. I understand the reason some art is so expensive but when it comes to a banana taped to a wall it makes me think about if we may be pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.

In my opinion this is not quite a bad piece of art as it is just somewhat a useless piece if art. When I look at it the only thing it makes me wonder is why? Why does this exist? Why is this here? Why would someone buy this?

Basically referencing that the banana represents everyone, of the human population.

I wonder if the value of how good or bad artwork is measured is through how society reacts to the piece. Not just's it's value but how society perceives that value.

I personally believe it's a good piece of artwork because it engages people and makes them think about a greater idea behind the banana. The Banana pushes people to wonder and think past the obvious.

"Comedian" purpose was to transform " nothing into something of value". Its intended meanings range from Charlie Chaplin's humor to the banana's significance as a symbol of international trade.

Conceptual art always amazes me, but this specific one makes me think wow a simple artwork can get you that much money. It amazes me in that sense but mimics our need for art to be distinctive, creative, or something many of us probably never thought of. Artwork is unique which makes it have value.

Good artwork? I couldn't grasp a yes or a no. I asked my sisters and they immediately said no, but once I told them how much it was and asked again if it was good art they said yes because of how successful it was. So yes it is good art work.

Question 1: I believe that the form of the work is eluding to multiple things, I believe the duct tape is representative of Cattelan's previous works and in the video they mention how on social media comment the banana is symbolic of "society, power and authority".

Question 2: This artwork makes me think about how we determine the value of art because of this big point of the certificate of authenticy. I believe that art shouldn't be differentiated based on a sheet of paper that says its authentic, in my head art stems its value from originality and techniques but also from not being able to be replicated and with this piece it can be replicated in a sense and that just doesn't seem right to me.

Question 3: I believe that this is not the greatest work of art because the only thing that prevents it from being replicated is the certificate saying it is not the real banana not the techniques used to create the piece or how it looks physically.

The video says that the banana could be in reference to many past uses of it in feminist art and other statement pieces, but personally, I think that it was used because it is such a common object that anyone can buy. Based on the artist's past work (Ex. taping the museum owner to the wall or the giant middle finger statue), i think that the banana was more for attention and shock value or kind of using the massive media response as the art itself and a way of making fun of the people attending and paying to see it. I think that duct-taping it to the wall was a way of the artist to say like "See look this is what you paid to see"

The art makes me wonder how the artist thought people were going to react to the banana. I had no idea that so many were sold before watching the video, so clearly art like this still holds a lot of monetary value, but as the lady in the video said, they aren't really buying the banana or the tape, they are buying the certificate that states that its art, signed by the artist as well as the foot traffic that they get in their museum.

In my personal opinion, I don't think the art is "good." To me this is because of the artist's motive for making this, while yes the banana taped to the wall created a huge media frenzy and made the artist a ton of money, it's still just a thought-provoking banana.

The banana references how he taped the gallery owner to a wall for two hours, the depiction of a woman with a tray of apples and how he hung all his pieces from the ceiling.

Seeing this artwork, it makes me question if composition and visuals of it really matter, I think that maybe art's quality is more about how well it fulfills its purpose rather than anything else.

Branching off of my theory above, yes I would call this good art even if it is not to my tastes.

The form of the piece alludes to the rest of Cattelan's art career. The duct tape and the fact that it is hanged up on a wall are both references to pieces he has done in the past, and the banana is a common symbol in contemporary art.

The "value" of art is intrinsically subjective. As the video states, it's more about the idea than the actual banana on the wall.

I like it when framed as a deconstruction of what high society values as "art." Whether or not it's "good" is again completely subjective, but I will say that this type of thing doesn't require a high degree of effort and could definitely be criticized as overshadowing other works with genuine thought put into them.

I like the image itself. The style is realistic, but not hyper realistic, which I'm finding out I love as I look at more and more pieces throughout this semester. This image also makes me thing of the cyclical nature of life, and how monotonous so much can be. This makes me think of someone waking up every morning to the same old boring routine, taking their pills that they take every morning, half asleep and wishing they could live some other extraordinary life. I don't know - it's so simple but it can spart so much thought.
