The song is an ode to self-love after the end of a relationship, and gives advice how to deal with a breakup. Love yourself, treat yourself well, be true to yourself, and don't let anyone hold you back (especially men). It is about the personal experience the author has made with an ex-boyfriend, who broke up with her over the phone, because he was still in love with his ex-girlfriend. And the song tells the story of the breakup and how she deals with it. The themes are self-empowerment after a breakup, embracing being a woman and being comfortable in your own skin.

The author asks the introductory question, “Why're men great till they gotta be great?”, and narrates from a personal, autobiographic perspective from her past disappointing relationship that ended in breaking up. In the beginning of a relationship you really are convinced that the guy is great, until you find out that he is not, because he has lied, cheated, or simply is not what he has pretended to be, in his oversubscribed confidence. This applies for the author to relationships on a personal, intimate level as well as to the greater perspective, for instance, in politics, in professional environments such as the work place and in the public sphere in general, as she explains this line with a tweet, Lizzo: “Why are men great until they gotta be great? Meaning: men hold the highest seats of power on the planet. They’re constantly appointed greatness and yet cannot seem to do any good with it.”

The poem is written in the lyric mode for the speaker to express his feelings and what he is experiencing. It seems as if the speaker is lost in the middle of a shadow play. He is hallucinating, confused and panicked. He sees things that disappear, hear voices that he doubts; everything is shadowy and ambiguous. This duality and ambiguity is the major theme of the poem and is expressed in different ways throughout the poem, but also by its title: “shadow play”.

In the first stanza, the speaker says: “I'm still not sure what part I play in this shadow play”, and in the last stanza he says: “I can't run away from this shadow play”. This shows that his motive changes from the beginning to the end. The ending seems to signal that the speaker remains forever lost in a nightmarish labyrinth, where reality and illusion merge and duality rules. Therefore, the conflict remains unresolved.

Dr Jekyll, an amiable person, has a dual personality and Mr. Hyde represents his evil side, which he has been in conflict with for many years. The duality of human personality is one of the major themes of the book. With making reference to it, the writer highlights again the main theme of his poem and reinforces it.

This allusion is very interesting and nicely shows that not only duality is everywhere outside around the speaker, but also surrounds him from within. The allusion helps the reader, who knows the reference, feel the speaker’s feeling much better by remembering the conflict between Jekyll and Hyde.
