We used a variety of materials and methods in class to try to understand and appreciate the meaning of visual arts (Wright, 2012). I have always found drawing, painting, and being artistically creative very difficult and therefore never enjoyed it much during school as I was always comparing my work to other students who had higher visual art skills and appreciation. I believe this is because of the endless volume of imagination and creativity that visual art encompasses and believe this is something I struggle with (McArdle, 2012). Because of my knowledge and views of visual arts I consider myself as ‘experiencing the new’ and ‘applying creatively’ regarding the Ryan and Healy table (Ryan & Healy, 2008). I think I am experiencing the new as I am still learning new and unfamiliar techniques for materials and concepts of visual art and I am applying creatively as I am experimenting with new visual art elements and materials in the weekly workshops. I do not necessarily believe I am good at visual arts but I do still enjoy taking part in art activities and have done so for my entire life when given the opportunity, for example I like to colour in and paint by number. I believe visual arts can be performed by anyone no matter the skill level. Throughout school I completed visual art workbooks and still have them today I look back on to see my progression of visual art skills and my discovery stage of visual arts. Furthermore, I enjoyed textiles art in Year 7 and 8 in high school and designed and made my own pillowcase and bag but did not continue further than this. I have always been fortunate enough to have experienced a range of art materials growing up and visiting art galleries and museums. I participated on stage in a dance competition for my school in year 4 along with my classmates and were lucky enough to win the competition which was a great experiencing for me in dance. Growing up I also went to gymnastics lessons every week and was something that I thoroughly enjoyed but did not continue pursuing. I am currently undertaking a gymnastics and dance subject this semester as I am doing PE teaching at university. I enjoy undertaking this subject and learning new dance techniques each week and performing them together as a class despite everyone’s ability level. I also thoroughly enjoy dance as a form of exercise as it’s a great way to burn calories while having fun. Through dancing for exercise, the dance competition I participated in in school and the university subject I am undertaking, my understanding of appropriate metalanguage connected with dance discipline such as choreography, improvisation and expression has improved and enhanced significantly (Ryan and Healy, 2008). I also performed in a Year 12 dance off at school before I graduated that had the girls and boys choreograph their own dance routines to compete to see who is better. I had the opportunity to dance as Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls with some of my friends and classmates at school which I thoroughly enjoyed. Music is considered a creative performing art that is comprised of improvisation, interpretation, creativity, and composition (Hallam, 2012). I have always enjoyed music from a young age starting with nursery rhymes and songs and constantly experience it in my everyday life. I enjoy listening to music because it offers a getaway from reality, inspires me, and entertains me no matter what mood I am in (Ryan & Healy, 2008). Music ability and talent has never been my strong point in terms of signing and musical instruments, but I have always appreciated a variety of musical genres and artists and am always willing to listen to new genres and music. Throughout high school I learnt the guitar and recorder in mandatory music classes, but it was not something I felt confident with so did not continue learning. I also believe this may have been because of the negative experiencing I had with learning music at school as it was often not taught well or catered for students with low music knowledge. I enjoy attending music festivals and concerts with my friends and discovering new artists and songs. These experiences allow me to appreciate the variety of factors that are associated with live musical performances, such as lighting features, different tempo and beats of the instruments, props, and audience engagement. I have a love for live music and have been lucky enough to experience some great bands and music performances in Sydney, Newcastle, and Melbourne and have been lucky enough to go to festivals such as Groove in the Moo and Vanfest. The growing popularity of technology and social media within our generation has allowed media arts to have a strong influence on my life any many other individual’s lives around me. Regarding the Ryan and Healy table I believe I belong into the categories of ‘experiencing the known’ and ‘applying appropriately’ (Matt & Healy, 2008). I believe belong to these areas as I am constantly using the same form of technology and media every day and it is almost second nature to me and I apply it to my social life and university life. I explore and engage in photography regularly using my iPhone as I enjoy taking photos of my friends, family, pets, and nature. I also enjoy taking polaroid and film photos as it provides a vintage and unique idea to the photos. I consider myself in the ‘experiencing the new’ and ‘analysing functionally’ part of the Ryan and Healy table (Ryan & Healy, 2008). I consider myself in these areas because drama is not my personal strong point, but I enjoy watching and engaging in drama and performances as part of the audience. I don’t have much interest or confidence in participating in musical performances or drama scenes as I struggle with public speaking in front of large crowds. I do however really enjoy going to musical performances and plays, and have been lucky enough to of experienced different musicals such as Cats, The Lion King, West Side Story, Mary Poppins, Annie, and many high school musical performances. It was an amazing experience to see how all the musical’s incorporated different elements of drama and performing arts to enhance the show. Different elements used were costumes, music, sound effects, and lighting. I find it very interesting and captivating how the musicals almost feel real to the audience and the effort that is put in behind the scenes to showcase this to the audience. Throughout high school I also had to analyse different plays and write essays about them for English.
