According to the National Health and Medical Research Council, currently there is not enough data to appropriately set a recommended daily intake for carbohydrates.

This does not reflect the major role carbohydrates play in a healthy diet, and it is cautioned individuals must look at the TYPE of carbohydrate they're consuming. Lifestyle differences regarding daily activity levels must also be factored in when considering how many carbs to eat (i.e. less for sedentary people and more for active people).

"Complex carbs" found in foods such as legumes, potatoes and rice are infinitely more beneficial when compared to "simple carbs" found in foods such as biscuits, cakes and lollies.

Sugar is composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

There are three types of carbohydrates: Monosaccharides, disaccharide and Polysaccharides.

Monosaccharides are single sugars, for instance fructose and galactose.
Disaccharides are pairs of monosaccharides. In a pair of disaccharides, one of the disaccharides is always glucose. For example, sucrose is glucose plus fructose.
For polysaccharides, few or more glucose units linked together in straight or branched chains.

There is a particularly popular diet on the internet, the low-carb diet. It focuses on boosting meat, fruits and vegetables, and fats to reduce or ban carbohydrate intake to achieve weight loss.

This method is based on the ketogenic diet, which was developed for the rehabilitation of epileptic patients. The hype of the stars and the fact that it works very quickly at first led many people to copy it.

In reality, however, this method is very harmful to the body of ordinary people. It has not been approved by the medical profession and is strongly resisted by nutritionists in particular. The reason is that it disrupts the normal, balanced nutritional intake. Many people regain a lot of weight immediately after fat loss. It also causes many physical and mental illnesses, such as hair loss and overeating. So, do not just follow the trend, each nutrient has its role to play. Carbohydrates, not poison!
