Explanation: Sam is characterized by one of his noticeable traits, compassion. As evidenced in the first quote, he is being very empathetic and shows concern about the way Willie is dancing the waltz, so he guides and teaches him to improve his dancing technique. In the second quote Sam is confronting Willie about the way he treats Hilda, Sam shows sympathy and concern for Hilda and tells Willie that he must not hit her.
