- Kennedy was immediately involved in Vietnamese events because by the time he was in office, the threat of communism was already at large.
- Kennedy funded Southern Vietnam war efforts to contain communism before his presidency, with 28.4 million dollars to fund the South Vietnamese army. This method continued into his presidency.

- On August 7th, 1964, the Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred when two naval battleships stationed off the coast of Vietnam were attacked, fully launching U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
- In 1965, Johnson authorized a major bombing campaign in North Vietnam, known as Operation Rolling Thunder.
- He increased the amount of troops in Vietnam from 75,000 to 125,000 in July 1965, and by October there were 200,000+.
- Agent Orange, a terrible herbicide compound demolished much of the forest used by the Viet Cong as guerilla warfare raged on.
- The U.S. was facing heavy losses and not making much progress. When this was occurring, January 30, 1968 marked the start of the Tet Offensive by North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. This crippled the U.S. public's opinion of the war even further.

- Vietnamization refers to the process of withdrawing U.S. troops and helping South Vietnam.
- Nixon's "Secret Plan" to end the Vietnam War was to keep the war going. After gaining control of foreign policy, he bombed Cambodia and sent U.S. Marines to invade Laos. After the New York Times, Nixon ordered wire tapping of gov. officials and journalists. He then tried to disengage from Vietnam while playing Russia and China off of each other. He signed a treaty of sorts with Hanoi, then after North and South Vietnam signed a cease fire, he once again ordered secret bombings of North Vietnam if they acted up.
