The continuous cycle of cooperation and conflict caused a lot of hostility among the Northern and Southern states. The events caused by this hostility can be seen as the reason why the south seceded.

The Mexican American war contributed to the cycle of conflict and cooperation by expanding the United States and creating new states that had to be marked as free or slave states. At the end of the Mexican American war, The United States won and gained a lot of westward territories. Some territories were both below and above the Missouri comprise line, and the North was very adamant on not letting the South expand any more than it already had. The North desired for suppression of the south, this caused southern civilians to feel attacked. Ultimately causing conflicting feelings on both sides. In the end, this conflict was one of the many reasons the south felt like it could no longer cooperate with the north, so it seceded.

Compromise of 1850

The compromise of 1850 contributed to the cycle of cooperation and conflict by enacting bills that caused tension between both sides. The determination of the new territories obtained by the Mexican American war, creating a fugitive slave act, and abolishing the selling and buying of slaves in the district of Colombia contributed to the cycle of cooperation and conflict. The North was furious that the south was allowed to expand with the inclusion of Texas as a slave state and even the expanding of Texas, in turn the south saw it as unfair that they only got one slave state and the north got three free states. This caused the fugitive slave act to be enacted as compensation, this forced the capturing and returning of escaped slaves to their previous owners. Although this act was in place, many Northerner didn't participate in the capturing, and instead gave them shelter in their homes. This further maddened the slave states, since they weren't upholding their agreement. Finally, the abolishment of slave trade in the district of Colombia was seen as a direct attack to slave states, before the north never took action on the concept of slaver, but after this bill, the south felt like the north would eventually try to abolish slavery entirely. In conclusion, these bills were another reason why the slave states seceded.

Bleeding Kansas (1855)

Bleeding Kansas contributed to the cycle of conflict and cooperation by creating disagreements about the stand on slavery in Kansas, resulting in physical battles between Northern and Southern civilians. Due to the integration of popular sovereignty to decide if a state should be free or slave, the people in Kansas were flooded with contradicting views. The debates of anti and pro slavery were so strong that it started a war between the anti and pro slavery civilians living in Kansas. This was shocking to both Northern and Southern states, before this they had talked about things peacefully, but a full on fight meant either side was ready and willing to die to support their cause. The south knew after this conflict that cooperations wouldn't be easy, so they opted to secede.
