Chaser who sadly passed away on July 23 back in 2019, was the world's smartest dog; knowing 1,022 nouns. She passed away due to natural causes and had a peaceful passing (Sparks H. 2019 July; Chaser, the 'world's smartest dog,' dies at 15). To this day, Chaser has a memorial webpage on Facebook for her remembrance. She was trained by Dr. Pilley for roughly 4-5 hours a day. Chaser was taught the names of her toys and would recognize sentences based on the prepositional objects, verbs, and direct objects i.e balls, stuffed animals, and frisbees. In an observational study, Chaser was trained to paw, nose, or take an object based on the command. With these commands, Pilley quickly recognized that Chaser understood that each verb had a different meaning.
(Taylor, D.B 2019 July; Border Collie Trained to Recognize 1,022 Nouns Dies). With Dr. Pilley, chaser had formed a unique relationship where she can understand and learn the human language, as we humans can with a foreign language (Taylor, D.B 2019 July; Border Collie Trained to Recognize 1,022 Nouns Dies). He believed that with patience and enjoyable reinforcement, we can teach anything to our loving pets.

Citation:
Taylor, D.B 2019 July; Border Collie Trained to Recognize 1,022 Nouns Dies
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/27/science/chaser-border-collie-dies.html

Sparks H. 2019 July; Chaser, the 'world's smartest dog,' dies at 15
https://nypost.com/2019/07/29/chaser-the-worlds-smartest-dog-dies-at-15/

Dr. John Pilley promised to never get a new dog after his former dog, Yasha, died but after a late-night conversation with some farmers, he started to research about dogs and their ability to understand proper nouns. His goals for his dog Chaser was to teach her the human language and to explore the canine brain. Pilley got Chaser on April 28, 2004. When she was 2 months old, she started to learn with a blue ball and by the time she was 7 months old, she already learned 40 words. She was able to use her brain and learn by inference just like how children would learn, and in total, she was able to learn more than 1,000 words throughout her lifetime.

Citation:
Mood, Abbie. “Chaser the Dog: Remember the ‘Smartest Dog in the World.’” American Kennel Club, American Kennel Club, 21 Aug. 2019, https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/news/remembering-chaser-the-smartest-dog-in-the-world/.

Chaser the Border Collie and John W. Pilley opened a whole new range of unexplored area for research regarding dogs. This is a major advantage for society. Common knowledge in society believed that the information and understanding of dogs were limited basic tricks and habits. Dr. John Pilley showed the information able to handled by dogs is much larger than ever thought. Dogs are very smart and this is a major advantage to society to know this. The fact that dogs can grasp and understand words in a language is groundbreaking. Chaser the Border is not a unique dog in a sense any dog could be able to have the same knowledge and skills with the knowledge.

Taylor, Derrick Bryson. “Border Collie Trained to Recognize 1,022 Nouns Dies.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 27 July 2019, https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/27/science/chaser-border-collie-dies.html.
