I found it interesting how she said that teachers who had broader use of language and understood varied ways of speech/student vocabulary were able to engage more students and it ties in with translanguaging because they are able to tap into students cultural wealth that includes language and prior experiences

I was especially struck by her thoughtful definition of the word "appropriate" in the classroom. Rather than viewing it as a rigid or universally fixed standard, she described it as something deeply contextual, shaped by students’ backgrounds, developmental stages, and the culture of the classroom community.

I never heard the term "language ideologies," and I found that idea fascinating.

The way that the professor reflected on her style of research and how it is implemented in the classroom gives us a great example on how to approach our own research. I really liked this week’s module and speaker. What really stuck out to me was when She stated that people with brown/darker skin are looked at as being deficient in literacy skills. I am interested in seeing the rubric that was created to see how well students were implementing argumentation in science. I do like how she said: "Ask a question, you never know what you are going to find."

I loved that she provided teachers with a training on culturally responsive pedagogy AND asked the teachers to create lessons using what they learned. I think this is an awesome way to build cultural awareness and respect in educational settings, and a way to help teachers feel supported in our mission to be able to teach all students.

I found the topic of translanguaging very interesting! It interests me because I work in a dual immersion school and often times I find myself wanting to dive deeper into translanguaging and my students abilities and language. I like the discussion that Catherine Lemmi provided in that language has variety and that it can allow for more space for students to fill in with their own language experiences and backgrounds. I also had my attention peaked when she talked about "undoing appropriate" and how that relates to language. There is an element of social justice in what she was speaking about and I relate it to this topic of how appropriate language is applied differently and how it often is racial. Finally, I found that "linguistically deficient" students are typically identified as being black or brown students which makes me wonder even more about this topic. Thank you for bringing up translanguaging and discussing its importance. Working at a school where we have a good majority of newcomers, or ELLs, it is important to work with their language as much as possible. I am interested in understanding how using other languages can help students with their formative testing. That is super interesting. Thank you!

Something that stuck with me from Dr. Lemmi's interview was when she said “When we look at language in that way [through a translanguaging lens], there's just a lot more space to invite students to bring their whole selves to the classroom and to draw on their language practices, their language skills, their language abilities in different ways in the classroom to learn and also to demonstrate learning.” Her words align closely with the goals of the dual immersion program that I currently teach in. EL students are encouraged to use both their home language and English to access content and demonstrate understanding.
