I want to teach myself how to visually record something heard or seen or researched in space documentaries or podcast about living in space. These drawings are mappings of pedestrians in parks, airports, malls, streets, and so on. They map the paths people are taking in paper by tracing lines according to the direction the eye perceives the movement. I find this way of mapping information satisfying and a good way to primary research. It inspires me to visually record a day in the life of an astronaut in space in a similar manor.

What I love about Boltanski’s publications and photography is that he captures someone’s life through their belonging and the person is shown through what they own. This photographic way of recording someone’s existence is really intriguing to me as I wonder what you could tell from someone through all their belongings – I recon A LOT. This got me thinking about how someone living in an international space station would be recorded in this way because they have so little of their own belongings in space and are unable to really make the station feel like their own. Would each individual astronaut’s movements around the space station give off their personality, or possibly the way they go about their little morning routines give it away? How does someone who’s life is micromanaged to almost the minute show their personality when many of their normal hobbies and lifestyles can’t be achieved in space.

Living in space is the most complex and intriguing situations to be in where someone’s world is literally turned upside-down. Your body changes, your views on life change, your surroundings change, rules of science change, regular routine changes; everything turns into this whole new reality and it is beyond fascinating. The amount of people having to work towards making simple things, like taking out the trash, possible in space is crazy and it’s amazing to me how things like this get done, especially as it may be the future for mankind.

I don’t know why exactly I have always been interested in space but it is possibly because it’s so unknown and seems almost like it can’t be real to me. The beauty of constellations and galaxies seem so obscenely stunning, how on earth has nature, by chance, created such weird and wonderful things that are so unreachable to humans. This contrast of these glowing hues of colour and texture that comes from plants and stars in space is so different to the industrial straightedge objects that get put in space and visually this just truly excites me. Also, living in space has this mathematical edge to it with all its numbers and diagrams which I always find so interesting when mixed with design because composition always ends up coming back to maths.

The daily routine of an astronaut living on the international space station compared to earth is beyond massively different. However, they still need to do many of the things we do yet with no gravity, living in a space the size of a five-bedroom house, for up to a year! What I find fascinating is the idea of every single tiny aspect of my life, as an astronaut would be monitored and scheduled. I mean it’s like being on love island for a really long time where you have almost no time not being watched. I find it terrifying that your whole life is monitored from your heartrate to every task and activity being timed to a tee. I would love to delve into research about the after affects it has on a person mentally, as all the information I have come across so far has all been very surface level about the effects living in space has on the body not the mind.

I also want to research the glorification of being an astronaut and working for NASA as the amount of people who spend a lifetime training to go into outer space and never ge the chance. Including this, the life of an astronaut is extremely tough when you’re in the spaceship. You are being worked way over the usual amount with 10 hours a day, your not showering, your drinking your own – and everyone else’s- wee, you hardly actually go outside of the space craft into space, your working your body exceedingly hard to make sure there’s no bone weakening or muscle loss and much more. However, I absolutely don’t want to say it is not insane to be able to live outside of this world and see the whole of earth with your own eyes. I want to do more research into how there are two sides of being an astronaut and how they contrast so heavily from not being able to ever wash your clothes to seeing the sunrise over the world every 90 minutes.

I am completely in awe of the fact that there is a literal machine that is travelling round mars mapping the entirety of its surroundings, and we can see it like google maps, is mad. The imagery from this ongoing expedition feels very strange because so much of it seems like its only a few miles away on our planet. It makes you realise how so many of these planets are actually very similar to the one we’re living on now and they suddenly don’t seem that far away. There is also Martian topography of mars that show the complexity of its geography. So much of this scientific graphing and mapping is so visually playful and I want to be able to research it enough to the point where I start to slightly understand what I’m looking at.

As space is so far and not very tangible to me, found imagery will be a large part of my research and possibly outcomes and people like Hamilton allow me to gain insight into how this can be done. His exhibition ‘man machine and motion’ was made up of 176 black and white photographs of our relationship with the machinery of movement. This did range from images of bikes and jets but what I loved were the images of space being suspended from the ceiling. Images of space travel and existence is so yummy to me because it is so foreign, often surrounded by this great expanse of blackness. These images on the ceiling were not just photographs but a collection of a variety of artist’s work ranging from illustrations to pulp science-fiction covers yet they all shared this same visual language. That is what I want to capture in my work, the idea that collections of imagery from different times and places can often work together and connections can be found to make them all unite.

This book was not made for designers or artists it was made for a small group of people who were interested in meteors and that is a simple charm that is hard to come by and would be impossible but amazing to try and grasp in my research and findings. Harvey Nininger simply collected meteorites in the 1930s and taught himself everything there was to know about them. Then, he ended up becoming an educator himself. This book is a tiny example of the expansive visual amazingness that can be found in the science that comes from researching space. This book is just wonderful to me because it really has stood the test of time graphically which is so intriguing because I feel it was never trying to be cool and trendy.

I don’t know exactly what my areas of expertise are but I enjoy working with numbers and figures which can be developed in this project as there is lots of science and experimentation around the ability to live in space. It’s a skill that almost everyone has but I love to organise imagery into categories depending on small similarities through typologies or maps and will be able to experiment with this ability on my subject. In political lands I learnt how to study an area it detail finding the hidden narratives within a space so vast. This way of roaming through information that I know so little about will be useful when exploring the international space station and how people live together even though they come from different cultural backgrounds and have different laws to follow. Before this course, I hadn’t a clue how to make publications and book bind so I would love to utilise this in collating all my research together for this project. I want to find new ways to format books so that it feels like you’re not even dealing with paper anymore but with a beautiful object in itself. I just cant wait to delve into such an interesting topic and start picking apart the unique complexities of a life in space.
