This photo depicts the area which was the Louisiana Purchase which Thomas Jefferson had purchased from France for the price of $15 million. He originally only wanted New Orleans but Napoleon offered all of that territory to Jefferson

Captain Lewis and Clark are the 2 people that President Thomas Jefferson had sent to go investigate and travel the Louisiana territory to search for pathways and any dangers there. They were helped by the Native American Sacagawea.

The red line on the photo above indicates the Mississippi River which is the reason that Thomas Jefferson had originally wanted New Orleans due to the river running through it since the Mississippi River could increase the United States trade.

The most famous canal was built, the Erie Canal. It stretches 363 miles and flows into the Hudson river which flows into the great lakes then Mississippi and lastly into the Ocean. This alternative was made because it was cheaper and roads could not be easily built.
