He went by Black Jack, which was derived from his service with an African American regiment early on in his career. (John J. Pershing, 1999) John J. Pershing was a U.S. Army general and commanded the American Expeditionary Force in World War 1. (John J. Pershing, 2009) Pershing had to basically build an army from scratch. He had to take care of the organizing, training, and supplying. This inexperienced group top at two million members.

Pershing was put into positions where he had what he had and had to make it work. There are many leaders today that will find themselves in those same positions. The ability to have the traits that Pershing did, such as organizational skills, persistence determination, and loyalty can put a leader on another level. The military needs structured leaders that lead by example as Pershing did.
