We think teachers can work together better by using social moderation. When teachers meet to look at student work and use the same rubric, they can agree on what “good work” looks like. This makes marking fairer and helps students. If we follow Timperley’s Cycle of Inquiry, we can notice problems, discuss them together, try new ideas, and then check if they work. In our own assessment design, we could invite other teachers to review the task and moderate samples to keep it fair and realistic.

A good way to build teacher collaboration in assessments is to use a shared document. All teachers can put their test questions, marking rubrics, and sample answers into one file. They can read each other’s work, add comments, and suggest changes in the same place. This makes it easy to see different ideas, agree on standards, and keep a clear record of decisions.

All participating teachers are required to independently score the samples in advance and assign anonymous homework (hide the names of the students and teachers). This can reduce the herd mentality and the influence of authority, ensuring that the discussion is based on the quality of the assignment itself. The focus of the moderation is how the assignment itself reflects the grading criteria, rather than arguing about who is right and who is wrong.

marking criteria

For effective moderation, we need clear marking criteria. Having clear standards is not the same as moderation itself, but it is an important way to make moderation work well. This can help avoid subjective bias and ensure fairness in the marking process.
