When we do see the mother, she is minimised by the use of drab and muted colours, a featureless face, and a hunched over posture. On the other hand, when the mother returns, she appears larger than life, has a defiant posture, and the others are grovelling in front of her. This shows a change in the balance of power. As the story progresses, the pig imagery keeps gaining prominence as Mr. Piggott's character keeps degenerating, and once the mother returns, the background images go back to normal again.
