Forensic psychologists are often involved in both criminal, as well as civil matters. Some may work in family courts, and others may work in civil courts. Those working with families may deal with custody disputes and child abuse investigations. On the contrary, those who work in civil courts may have to make competency assessments, provide second opinions, and provide psychotherapy to crime victims. Some forensic psychologists work within criminal courts and assess mental competency, work with child witnesses, and provide an assessment of juvenile and adult offenders.

Experts have suggested that forensic psychologists must have a solid legal knowledge, understand how psychology and the law intersect, have specialized training in clinical forensic psychology, and a background in the ethical issues with forensic psychology.
