Susan’s real family, consisting of Gerald, Muriel and Rick, is described as “solemn”, “grim looking” and “unattractive”. On the other hand, all the members of her fake family, consisting of Andy, Lucy and Tony, all have the same uniform descriptions of being “tall, good looking, atheletic, easy-going and charming”. As a reader it is jarring and strange that Susan’s fake family are almost like clones of one another. This is stark contrast to her real family, which are described differently and not as exceptional as her fake family.

The description of her imagined family is more dream-like compared to that of her real family. The diction used juxtaposes Andy as a "tall, good-looking, athletic, easy going and charming" man, while Gerald is merely a "solemn man". This shows that Andy is of a unrealistic picture-perfect character that matches with her ideals, while Gerald is someone with flaws.

Gerald and Andy are clear opposites in their physical description which implies the intensity of her hate for her real family/reality and the fact that her real husband is the complete opposite of her imagined husband implies that she really wants to escape her reality.
T: Using juxtaposition between Gerald and Andy, it is shown that they are clear opposites
C: Susan describes Andy to be "tall, athletic and good-looking" however Gerald is described to be "unattractive" and "solemn".
C: Andy comes across as perfect and the man of her dreams while Gerald seems to be boring and passive. Her imagined family is implied to be upbeat and energetic while her real family seems to be dull and boring.
M: This juxtaposition emphasises how contrasting the 2 families are.
(Focus on the diction)
(The meaning don't really reflect the paragraph)
(Go a step further)

At the start of play, Andy and Gerald are very different characters.

uses contrast to highlight the differences between Susan's husbands - imaginery Andy and real Gerald.
When Andy finds out Susan has stepped on a rake, he offers to 'take extra special care of (her)'.
This suggests he was going to personally nurse her back to good health and it shows how loving and caring Andy is.
On the other hand, Gerald only brings up the topic of Susan stepping on the rake later on in their conversation only when Susan mentions she planted a Bush 'in between hitting (herself) on the head'. Then Gerald asks how her head was. This suggests Gerald might be less caring and doting of Susan as he doesn't ask her how she is until she mentions it. This juxtaposition serves to show how different Gerald and Andy is.

(incomplete)

Susan's real family is depicted as very dull while her imaginary family is described is picture perfect. Her imaginary family is "tall, good-looking, athletic," this suggests that she her perception of them is influenced by the advertisement she is exposed to. However, her real family is "entirely lacking the lightness and ease of her earlier family" this shows that her real family is mundane and lifeless. She is unable to express her true emotions.

These characteristics of Andy can be seen by diction. He uses the word "darling" several times showing his love towards her.

Using juxtaposition, it is shown that Andy shows her love and concern whereas Gerald is not the least bit worried about her. Andy finds her daftness endearingly amusing whilst Gerald does not. Although Andy jokes around about her daftness, he ultimately shows her affection through acts such as “blowing her the gentlest of kisses on one of his fingers” and reassuring her that she means a lot to him. Gerald, on the other hand, is unappreciative of what she does for the household and even goes as far as to accusing her of being lazy, as seen from, “All I am saying is — you still don’t seem to have enough to do”. Therefore, there is a a stark contrast
