Hypothyroid is the condition of insufficient production of the thyroid horomone from the thyroid gland.

Primary Causes of Hypothyroidism:
The Thyroid glad is the problem. The Thyroid is not producing hormones (most important is T3 and T4) regardless of the anterior pituitary gland telling it to do so ( Via releasing of TSH-Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). Lab values in this situation would show elevated TSH and low T3 and T4 values.

Conditions that would affect the Thyroid gland include:
-Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune disease)
-Iodine insufficiency
-Adverse effects from treatments for hyperthyroidism

Secondary Causes of Hypothyroidism:
The problem is with the Pituitary gland (Hypopituitarism). The Hypothalamus would release TRH (Thyrotropin releasing hormone) to stimulate the anterior pituitary gland to produce TSH, but pituitary gland will not do so. Common causes include:
-Tumours
-Infection
