This was affirmed when Derek went to go give Lila the roses and she immediately shouted and threw them down. However, when she picked them up and decided to take them back he probably knew that she was doing him a favor in not publicly embarrassing him. I'm assuming that  Derek felt this way because of his past and experience with getting bullied. In the end, when Derek gave Lila flowers and she rejected them he was devastated and wanted to cry but when Lila picked them back up she saved him from humiliation. The other kids already though that he was strange, so getting made fun of didn't help much. When he started to give out those strange gifts, I think it gave him some self-esteem because Lila didn't reject them. When Lila threw then on the ground, he definitely felt like the world ended for him, but when Lila picked them back up, de felt like he still had a chance.
