Text A is written in the form of an article for the purpose of sharing an experience with the audience who are middle aged men that happen to read the Guardian. The writer directly address the audience through a minor declarative " Something strange happens to men in middle age" although arguably general the noun " men" emphasises the target audience. This is then contrasted by the short declarative 'not all men'. The negative lexis 'not' reveals the doubts of the author about all men sharing this middle-aged experiences. The determiner 'Many' quantifies the number of men who are perceived to 'sail through it with no issues at all'. However, this makes the reader sympathise with him and share in his thoughts.

Nick Page presents a very pessimistic attitude towards ageing using listing. Through the use of the tricolon 'sit down, stand up or pick up any object' he dramatises the effects of ageing and makes it seem like its a debilitating illness that completely incapacitated him. Furthermore, the use of asyndetic listing in the quote 'those dark nights of the soul staring at the ceiling, pondering the ultimate question of middle age', makes Page's suffering sound never ending and as though ageing is the worst thing in the world.
