Our senses have a powerful effect on learning! It may be obvious to some, but to me I didn't realize the impact senses have on learning until just a few weeks ago. One which really caught my attention was temperature, which would be a sub-category of feel. I can remember my fellow students, typically girls, who always seemed to be cold in class. I recall that it was almost all they could talk about or think about. It would drive me bonkers, but now I understand the impact it could have had on their learning! If I choose to become a teacher, I will definitely take this sense into consideration!

Supporting a student in their educational journey goes a long way for them. If a student knows they have a teachers support, it helps foster the positive learning environment we all want to achieve. Think back to when your days before college. Now think of the teachers who supported you and the ones who couldn't have cared less about you once the bell rang. I don't believe people become teachers with the intent to not be supportive, but it happens, and the student is the one who loses out.

Before I had begun this class, I had never heard of Brain Based Learning. As with most I thought I was familiar with the process, but didn't know the name. Boy, was I wrong! The segments on neuroplasticity, motivation, movement, and chapter ten of the text blew me away!. Basically weeks 2-6! Hahaha.

I believe it was in my Introduction where I used this image before. When I was introduced to BBL and began learning about it, I couldn't help but think of learning as a file cabinet. How each thing we learn gets attached to prior knowledge and then filed away for later use. Sort of like a file cabinet!

This image represents capacity. Not so much brain capacity, but the capacity to learn. There is no limit to how much we can learn or what we can learn about. However, there are limitations as to our own capacity to learn. Sometime people are not mentally prepared to learn. You van be an amazing teacher, but if a student is closed off and doesn't want to learn, it will be difficult to overcome that barrier. It is up to us to try to overcome any reluctancy and to create a safe and positive learning environment for that individual. As you build trust with that student, the barriers will fall.

This first one isn't so much a quote as it is a segment in the text. In part 2, chapter 3, there is a segment titled "senses are Signals" (Jensen & McConchie 2020). This entire chapter had a big impact on me because it made me realize how important a comfortable learning environment is.

Another impactful video was the video in week 4 on morning meetings. After watching this I began implementing morning meetings into my homeschool classroom the very next day. They really help set the tone of the day and prepare my students for learning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiuAFOv8wvw

Jensen, E., & McConchie, L.

This video is about how to improve learning for your students, have them learn faster, and have them learn more effectively. She mentions using our phones less, exercising, improving alertness, and so much more. Dr. Dr Lila Landowski is a neuroscientist and lecturer who speaks on how the brain works to become a more effective learner.
