Sex is everywhere. Sex is used to market products, promote events and entertain. You can access sexual content through advertisements, magazines, movies, PC or on your phone. There is nothing wrong with sex. In fact, without it, you wouldn’t be reading this right now. Sex is natural, pleasurable and healthy, but there is a lot of misinformation about sex, and some of the information can be harmful. Studies now show that non-violent, sexually objectifying media (such as that seen in easily accessed magazines and on TV shows) has great consequences for the consumer. Long term exposure to sexually objectifying media can create addiction, damage relationships, cause depression and emotional distress and help sustain violent attitudes in our society. When people view sexually explicit content depicting individuals as sexual objects, it creates harmful attitudes and enforces unhealthy behavior. These attitudes and behaviors can damage our perceptions of ourselves and other people. It is important to be able to recognize these influences and respond appropriately to its harmful consequences. Hypersexualized media is harmful, and it has lasting consequences. A primary solution to these problems includes accessible education about healthy sexual practices and support for those interested in abstaining from sexual media all together. Included below are various websites which take an educational and compassionate approach to adopting a cruelty free sexual lifestyle.

Wright, P. J., & Tokunaga, R. S. (2016).
