The French Revolution sparked hope in the people of France. They were ready for change; contemporaries were "excited and repulsed" (Page 1) by the debates and ideas shared. For instance, Edmund Burke shared his conservative views of the French Revolution; he believed that the faster France changed, the more violent the government would act.

An outcome of the French Revolution is that people lived with more freedoms. The French issued the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen which listed freedoms such as speech, press, and religion. This document was very similar to the Bill of Rights in America because Thomas Jefferson shared his ideas with French legislators. The idea of natural born rights was swiping the globe.

Nationalism is a democratic principality, and it started in France. The goal of nationalism is to defend the interests of the people and limit the government's control. Those like Charles Maurras who thought the French Revolution lacked nationalism thought that the French Revolution's legacy was completely negative, while those like Karl Marx who thought the French Revolution was a good start to Communism thought the French Revolution was very important.

About 50,000 people died on the guillotine, including King Louis XVI. This was a common punishment and an example of the extreme chaos and harshness of the French government at the time. The use of the guillotine didn't die out until 1977. Even after the French Revolution's "Reign of Terror", tensions existed and 20,000 people died in street fights.

The Eiffel Tower was built to celebrate the French Revolution. Even though the French Revolution occurred a long time ago, people still remember it today because of the architecture and literature that symbolizes it and is still with us today. The works of Charles Dickens, other authors, and cinematic films, "these literary treatments kept the people, the events, and the ideas of the Revolution alive for generations" (Page 4).

Thomas Paine was one of the first French men to suggest a Constitution that guaranteed the natural rights of man. Enlightenment thinking and ideas of liberty spread across the world. Also, the French Revolution was a time for political and philosophical inquiry.
