They then will represent the blocks by drawing long lines ( longs that represent 10) and dots ( cubes that represent 1). After both numbers of the equation are represented, students start in the ones place and find the total. If they have more than 10, they can regroup ten ones for a ten. An example of this strategy can be viewed in the attached video.

Third Graders will begin Topic 4 on November 8.  We will learn to use our known multiplication facts to help us solve unknown division facts.  This is helpful when dividing by any number, but especially 0 and 1 which is always confusing for third graders!  The pictures below demonstrate how we use this in the classroom.
