The conflict between Spain and the United States arose due to the Yellow Journalism. The newspaper exaggerated events in Cuba to incite anger against Spain and America. The final spark came when the USS Maine exploded in harbor and killed 16 American sailors, and the newspapers blamed Spain.

The United States quickly defeated Spain, marking its rise as a world power, and the war ended with the Treaty of Paris. Spain lost its colonies, and the U.S gained.
