This was our first film in Acie Media. We wrote our story about a boy named Miguel. Miguel was looking for the gold inside of a school. My role was an actress named Jessica. Jessica was the one who told Miguel that his partner was double crossing him.
Our film had a good story line. It had a strong beginning, middle, and end. The editing and sound effects were very good. The effects had good television influence. The sound could have been better. It was hard to hear the actors sometimes. The actors dragged on some of their lines so it made it seem like they forgot what there lines were.

Film Remake and Reflection

We were assigned another group's film and we were tasked with rewriting and improving the script. We included 10 different kinds of shots and camera movements. The original plot was about a cheating boyfriend. When the girlfriend found out, she tried poising him but ended up accidentally poising his best friend. We changed and improved the story by making it a clearer storyline and by making the story about public humiliation. My role in the film was being one of the main actors. I was the girlfriend who got revenge on the boyfriend for cheating by publicly humiliating him. It was different from the first film because in the first film I was a side character and now I am one of the main characters.
In our film, we improved the storyline and made it clearer to follow. We did well in tracking and in transitions. We broke the 180 rule in the scene where 3 characters are sitting at the bench talking. This confused the audience because 1 character was in 2 different spots without moving. We included a fast motion during the scene when the girlfriend was talking to her best friend about the plan to get revenge. This worked because it sped up the scene so you could not hear what the plan was. The wide shot in the classroom scene worked because it showed the boyfriend getting humiliated after he cheated.

Genre and Representation Reflection

Over this unit, we studied many movie genres. We covered the movie genres: Thriller, War, Animation, Comedy, Musical, Mystery, Horror, Superhero, Romance, Science Fiction, Sports, Drama, Crime, and Adventure. We studied conventions, codes, and audience expressions for each of these movie genres. With each of these genres, we also watched three different movie clips from three different time periods that highlighted the genre. Some of the additional films we watched were hybrids. Hybrid movies are movies that include two genres. An example of this would be a romantic comedy.
In my previous movie group, we created two films. Our first film called the Golden Adventure was a hybrid of adventure and drama. This movie is about two teams racing to find the hidden gold first. A majority of our shots and camera work were panning and tracking as we followed our actors as they tried to find the gold. The audience is expected to be entertained and interested while watching this film. Our film remake called The Cheater was a drama. This drama includes a love affair and revenge. Some of the shots we used were close-ups and wide shots to make the revenge scenes more noticeable. In this film, the 180-degree was broken during our outdoor scene at the bench. In all of our films, we broke codes, conventions, and audience expectations.
My personal favorite genre is horror. This potential film would be about a killer clown that follows people and taunts them before he kills them. This movie would have dark lighting, silhouettes, and jumpscares. The setting would take place in a regular town and especially things happening at night. The audience would expect to feel scared and on the edge of their seat.

Editing and Sound - Midterm Film

I had my film uploaded but I checked later in the year and it says my account doesn't exist so, therefore, this film isn't there anymore.

In November and December of 2022, we learned about editing, sound, and screenplay/screenwriting format. We as a class studied film editing concepts and created documents featuring 20-plus kinds of editing techniques. We watched a documentary on film editing called "The Cutting Edge" and a video on the use of color. We studied sound basics and watched a documentary on sound called "Making Waves". We read the screenplay for "The Incredibles" and we learned how to format screenplays using special software. We also wrote a two-minute horror film opening about someone having a nightmare. This is the basis for our midterm film project.
The requirement for our midterm film was for it to be a one to two minutes, a horror or horror hybrid, an opening rather than a finished film product, miminal dialogue, no wall to wall music, no long takes, start in black with company indent and/or logo and title, minimum of three crosscuts between actor and nightmare, editing/shot/uploaded by student, and accompaning blog post. The shot list that the film must include is: close up, one dutch angle, one high or low angle, one low key light set up or one silhouette, one pan or tilt or track/push or spinaround, one zoom or dolly zoom, one subliminal cut or multitake or smashcut, one matchcut, one J or L cut, one use of slow or fast motion, one intentional use of color for story/emotion, one instance of intentional use of costume/hair/makeup, one instance of visual complexity in setting choice (color, texture, depth, lines, shapes, etc.), three sound effects and one piece of incidental music or one sound motif repeated three times. There was extra credit to include: quick cuts, montage, wide establishing shot, split screen, POV shot, reflection shot, intentional break of the fourth wall, intentional break of the rule of thirds, rack focus or pull focus shot, intentional use of handheld camera work, use of color filters to create a dream like quality, fisheye lens or fisheye effect, and a company logo with high quality graphic.
In my film I adhere to horror conventions/codes by using a black and white filter when my character is in her bad dream. I adhered to audience expectations and engagment by switiching between my character having a bad dream and her actual dream. I did not break any covenentions, codes, or audience expectations and engagment. I kept with the codes and coventions horror films typically have. The people that I represented in my film are the ones that push themselves to hard and are afraid of fauilure.
In my piece, the cuts to the dream and the color was successful. The cuts inbetween reality and the dream flowed and was not choppy. The transition to black and white to represent the dream was also successful. Something less successful in my piece was my actor. I couldn't get her to act and at the end act startled when she woke up from the nightmare. I also was unsuccesful with getting enough footage. The film was to short and couldve been longer if I kept the camera rolling for longer. The software that I used was arc studios to make my script, an iphone to film, and imovie to edit my film. I have learned alot from making this film and editing it without a team. I learned now to keep recording before and after the part that you need.

Two minute film opening analysis

In the first two minutes of Prisoners, we open up to the woods as Keller Dover takes his son Ralph Dover hunting. They shoot a deer and as they drive home, Keller is giving Ralph a life lesson about being prepared for anything. The genre of Prisoners is thriller/ crime and the target audience is males 18-35. The opening title sequence is Warner Bros. but instead of it being the normal yellow and blue, it shows up in grey instead. Also in the title sequence, it shows the man shooting a bow in an arrow which is the logo of Alcon Entertainment. Then, it shows the name of the film in simple letters and in simple black and white. This all aligns with the movie because it shows that this is a serious film. Visually, after the logo is shown it fades from black into a snowy woods area. A deer comes out from behind one of the trees and the camera zooms out and we see an over-the-shoulder shot of Keller and Ralph Dover. The sound of the first two minutes is the sound of the woods, the wind blowing, and the rustling ground. Then Keller starts talking. Then there is a gunshot and you hear Keller put his hand on Ralph's back. Then you hear a car driving on the road with the radio in the background as Keller and Ralph have a conversation. At the end of the two minutes, I wanted to know more. I wanted to see what they were gonna do with the deer, where they were headed, and where their conversation was heading too. I noticed nothing special with the editing style of the clips. The first two minutes of the film did not show anything that adheres to or break the conventions of a thriller/crime film. The first two minutes also do not represent any social groups, people, or issues. I think this film is distributed on Netflix because a lot of people have Netflix and would watch this film if it was on the Netflix recommended list.

Independent Distribution and Marketing Plan -- Heart Stolen

1. If we were going to distribute our film independently we would go to a film distributor and to help release our film. We would release first in theaters and then a few weeks later we would release on Netflix. This would get our movie out there to the public and other people to get interested in our film.

2. The title of our film is called Heart Stolen because Bella and Noah were going on a date when Bella gets stolen which causes it to be a play on words considering the storyline. Yes, our title works because it goes with the theme of the film. Our title could not be improved more because there is not much it could be changed to, to make it better.

3. Our tagline could be "who's her kidnapper". In our movie the person who the audience thinks is the kidnapper, is not. Someone else kidnappers her instead. This would cause our tagline to correspond with our film.

4. Our target audience is men 15-24. There income and education level will be of average. They would like thriller/kidnapping movies. They most likely enjoy watching the true crime podcasts and shows. On social media they most likely watch Youtube videos talking about thriller movies or giving reviews on thriller movie. They are on TikTok and they watch videos about the thriller movies they want to watch. For entertainment they watch thriller movies or the play scary video games. They shop at places like HotTopic and Spencers.

5. Using the information above to reach out to our target audience we can use self distribution tactics. We would reach our target audience through trailers because a lot of people go to the movies and watch cable TV so they would see our trailer there. We could put ads in on Instagram so as our audience is scrolling they would come across our film. We could make a TikTok page and post behind the scene footage. We could make videogames that would interact our target audience because some of our target audience enjoys video games. We could make a blog and post reviews about our movie. We could enter it into a film contest to get it shown to other faces and possibly get a deal out of it from a big company. Outside of things that are virtual, some nonvirtual things could be t-shirts with the characters on them because our movie will be popular and our audience would want to buy our merch. Inside of movie theaters we could put our characters and name on the movie on the design of the popcorn buckets and drink cups. This will get anyone who buys food and drinks at the movies to look at the container and want to see our movie. We could have our movie posted in the posters outside the movie theater that people see as they are walking in. We could also make a book based on the movie incase some of our audience would rather read than watch the movie.

6. In order to engage our audience we could post interactive ads. In this interactive ads it could be a game. It could be a little person you move around the the task is to "help Bella run away from her kidnapper". It could also be something like "who do you think Bella's kidnapper is and it shows 3 characters from our film. Once you click on a character the screen could just show words and say "only one way to find out, go watch Heart Stolen".

7. We would design our movie poster with Bella's face with a hand covering it. Her face could look distraught with messy hair and tears rolling down her face clashing into the hand covering her mouth. We could also add some bruises on the neck to engage the audience to know how to got those bruises. We would put our tagline on the bottom and the font of our title would be jagged and scary looking with a shadow casted over it. Some main colors we would use are dark grey, black, and dark blue/purple. Our poster would be in very dark colors to inform the audience that it is a thriller movie.

I have learned through the production and editing process, that it is difficult. It is difficult to know what is good material and what needs to be taken out. The feedback the was given though our rough cut, was that our film was bad. We had to refilm the entire thing for our second cut. It is hard to film and get the actors to pay attention, remember the lines, show facial expressions, and have the correct body movement. We changed some lines to fit what was going on in the scene because the script did not make sense when it came to the actual filming part and story line.
