"I refused to give him my shoes. They were all I had left"..."Later, they were taken from me anyway"(Wiesel 48).This quote symbolizes dehumanization by showing how the Nazis stripped the Jews their own identity. They did this by taking away their belongings that had a significant meaning to them. By taking away their belongings, they took away a part of each individual, in this case Elie.

"There was no floor. A roof and four walls. Our feet sank into the mud." (Wiesel 38). This quote shows how the people in the camps were living in conditions that humans don't live in. In the quote he talks about how there was no floor because the floor was just mud that they were sinking into. This makes them less of humans because they don't have a common thing that all humans use and have.

"Why, but why must I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled" (Wiesel 67). This quote also represents dehumanization because it shows how the faith and hope was lost for Elie. His faith was always a part of who he was and who he wanted to be but now, all that was destructed. He lost his hope, that changes him, it dehumanized him.

"No water, no blankets, less soup and bread. At night, we slept almost half naked and the temperature was thirty below." (Wiesel 70). This shows dehumanization because these people were being treated in conditions that humans can't normally live in. People don't live in freezing conditions without blankets and they would have food and water but they were deprived both of those.

"We received more blows than food. The work was crushing"(Wiesel 77). These people were forced to do manual hard labor, deprived of food and were beaten. They were beaten more than they were fed in the camps. A normal person isn't beaten if they don't do their work and they are not deprived of food.

Elie Wiesel:
Elie Wiesel epitomizes dehumanization throughout the book by...
1)"Where He is? This is where- hanging here from this gallows..."
This quote shows how Elie lost his hope. He lost the one thing that kept him going, that kept him being the boy he was, now that is lost. He had no hope ever since he saw that child being hung.
2) "What happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked" (Wiesel 39). This quote shows Elie's lack of response and lack of certain feelings that he used to possess. Before the camp, he would have done something, felt something. However, he didnt. He was so emotionally drained that he expected the worse at all times.

Moishe the Beadle:
Moishe epitomizes dehumanization throughout the book by...
1)"...all foreign Jews were expelled from Sighet. And Moishe the Beadle was a foreigner. Crammed into cattle cars by Hungarian police, they cried silently (Wiesel 6)." This shows how Moishe was dehumanized because he was forced into tiny cattle cars filled with many other people and were taken to a camp.
2)"They were forced to dig huge trenches... This took place in Galician forest, near Kolomay. How had he, Moishe the Beadle, been able to escape? By a miracle. He was wounded in the leg and left for dead... (Wiesel 6)" This quote shows how Moishe was forced to dig a trench, basically his own grave, just so he could be shot and killed in there with other Jewish people.
