My main takeaway from the morning session is the idea of implementing a more collaborative, bilingual co-teacher model in my classroom. This will help us ensure that our input is comprehensible and that we appropriately build background knowledge for our students, especially before beginning a new unit. I am hoping this will help with focus, engagement, and behavior management among my ELL students and will also help to build their self-esteem and self-confidence.

My main takeaways from the presentation were about using a variety of strategies and techniques for classroom activities. It is important to use reading, writing, speaking and listening in each lesson. Also, group collaboration and discussion can be done in authentic ways.

The strategies I saw implemented were various co-teaching methods, visual aids, using different delivery techniques, modelling the activities, quieting the class using physical cues.

This can be done through language, visual arts, movement and so much more. This will help ensure students are able to understand not only the topic being taught and what is expected of them. It also helps students to not get bored and become unengaged with the subject.

My main takeaway from this morning is the importance given to the language. We tend to give more importance to one language over another. However, students are more than able to achieve the content objective without necessarily be fluent. Teachers and admin know that L1 is equally as important as L2. The strategies used were multiple, from rephrasing, to using visuals, body language, appropriate voice levels, timing, small group work, ... all in order to activate all components of SWRL.

I think that this training gave me many creative ideas that I can take away and apply to my classes. I particularly liked the 'Survivor' game! This game encouraged us to discuss The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol as a small group. From this, it was promoted for us to think creatively about the importance of our designated part of class and which part of class we could leave out. This helped us to work together as a team and bounce of each other's strengths! I will definitely be incorporating this game into my lesson planning for my future classes at BWYA!
