Audiotree is a website, YouTube channel, and radio station based out of Chicago, IL with the intent to give a gateway to listeners and expose them to new, up and coming artists. They have a moto of “we grow music,” meaning they help young artists gain a following and become “heard.” Audiotree has helped many indie, punk, hip hop, folk, americano, experimental, and other forms of genres gain a “name” for themselves. This means that when one is to think of indie rock, there becomes a distinct image in their heads of what indie rock means. Recently, bands from Colorado, such as Gleemer and Slow Caves have both made an appearance on the site.

This exposure of underrepresented composers as well as extended technique and 'out-there' pieces is important in today's music society who praises dead white men's writing from hundreds of years ago. This slow tempo definitely paid tribute to the culture and got people excited about punk. Experimental music is a general label for any music that pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions. Experimental compositional practice is defined broadly by exploratory sensibilities radically opposed to, and questioning of, institutionalized compositional, performing, and aesthetic conventions in music. Elements of experimental music include indeterminate music, in which the composer introduces the elements of chance or unpredictability with regard to either the composition or its performance. Artists may also approach a hybrid of disparate styles or incorporate unorthodox and unique elements.

Musique concrète is perhaps the most useful as a starting point in the history of sampling. It was rooted in attempts at new forms of classical composition as composers like Pierre Schaeffer, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Steve Reich turned away from traditional musical structures and instrumentation. This was to have a tremendous impact on classical music in the 20th century as the ideas and techniques espoused by these composers dominating for the rest of the century. Most importantly, these classical experimentalists introduced a new concept into music: the utilisation and reinterpretation of existing material to create original works of art. Much like today's artist sampling is a way to extract melody, harmony or rhythm from any given recorded article. These articles allow the artist to expand their horizon of musical instruments that overall grow the genre of music.

Ecstatic Waters: Example of Experimental Music

Ecstatic Waters by Steven Bryant
One aspect of experimental music is the element of chance: every performance will never be the same by design. In this specific piece, chance is evident in the clarinet solo around minus mark 13:00-around 18:00. The clarinet solo is hooked up to a microphone which goes through a sound alteration algorithm, which is so large it is practically impossible to have the exact same performance every time. Not only is this element of chance in it, but this piece is written for band and electronics, which is pushing the edges of traditional music. The conductor has a track playing in his ear to line up with the electronics perfectly. It is a revolutionary piece as one of the first people to write for band and electronics.

But what is experimental music? According to the Wikipedia, it is a general label for non traditional music that pushes the boundaries of genre definitions. If we go by this definition, there has been pieces like Pierrot Lunaire by Shchoenberg, Music for Black Angels by George Crumb or Symphonic Fantastique by Berlioz written in 1830. There is so much music out there that does not follow traditional music. Even Debussy, a common known classical composer, technically was an experimental composer by this definition because he did not follow traditional music standards. Additionally, isn't every piece of music experimental? Finding a new order of notes to make melody, harmony, etc? This broad definition is not satisfactory for the true idea of experimental music. If you talk to a classical musician, they may think of experimental music as music with chance in it. One definition is that the sound of the piece is uncertain or unknown until it is performed. Whether by the performer or electronics affect the way something is played, that is experimental. Every single recording of the piece may be different. Our padlet covers both definitions, both music that may be harsh to the ear and music full of chance.
