This drawing demonstrates the view of Omelas from afar, with somebody who left, looking back towards the city. The city is the only part that has color because Omelas is a place of happiness and joy, even with the child locked up, essentially holding the society together. This is in sharp contrast to the rest of the world which is devoid of color. This illustrates how all good things are inherently linked to something bad, but that does not stop Omelas from being a place of joy. Although the rest of the world is conscious and “good”, their lives are nowhere near as good as those who live in Omelas. This is the perspective given to the man on the cliff who’s looking back at Omelas, the place where he grew up, and he sees that his lack of perspective and knowledge blinded him from the truth.

The Question of Knowledge

There is an eternal question in life, is knowing more better? This question has been pondered by many great thinkers over the years and while there is no definite answer, the answer should be a simple one, yes or no. To me, the answer is yes, completely and absolutely yes. And while there is always room for debate, the arguments against that fact are made in vain. It is not the fool that brings about the greatest change in the world, it is the one with the conviction, the knowledge and belief that they are right and if they find an error in their ways, they adapt, adjust and continue on, safe in the knowledge that they will change the world for the better. You do not find normal, mediocre people leading countries or starting revolutions, you see ones with power over their lives.

The late Nelson Mandela, the man who freed South Africa from the tyranny of apartheid, was once a militant who fought with guns for the abolition of apartheid, but he was imprisoned for that, for 27 years. He returned to the world with new knowledge and a new direction, he fought the good fight, brought a country with centuries of racial tension together, all because he had the intelligence to change his way of thinking, to adapt to his new circumstances and affect change. While the mediocre man would’ve retained his old strategies, fighting in vain without thinking, Mandela changed his ways, to change the world. As the saying goes, knowledge is power, and in this case, knowledge was the power to change a country forever.

Knowledge is the root of all success, it is the power to win a war and redefine how we look at the world. In war, knowledge is the source of a successful effort. Throughout history, the result of war has hinged upon who could have the most knowledge of their opponent’s operations, who could pick the right target. In the first years of World War II, Nazi Germany was winning, they had the Enigma, the unbreakable cipher, and none of their communications were able to be read even when they were captured. But once Alan Turing broke that cipher, the war changed, there was now a huge advantage to the Allied forces, and as we know, they won the war, primarily because of that knowledge.

It is a fairly simple answer to what may seem like a complicated question. If these examples do not affect you, ask yourself this, would you rather know nothing and live comfortably and have no control over your life? Or would you rather have knowledge, with potential for negative consequences, with control over your life? I for one, would rather have control, and that should be the case for all people, human nature yearns for control. I will not be bogged down in the mediocrity and ignorance of lacking knowledge, I will not relinquish control just to be more comfortable. I will have knowledge, I will rise above.
