THE HERO

In this section, Beowulf, who portrays the Hero Archetype, acts as an expression of our personal and collective unconcious. Despite the fact that he might lose his life, he still marches into battle with the Dragon in order to avenge his fallen comrades and the burnt remaints of his village. In the passage, as Beowulf awaits the appearance of the beast, Beowulf is described as "Bold under helmet, bearing his sark Under the stone-cliff; He trusted the strength of his single might. Not so does a coward!" (Lines 1509-1511) In his description, Beowulf is displayed as selfless, brave, and determined, which are common traits of those who posess the Hero Archetype.

1. (Line 1487) "The king for the last time greeted his comrades". This illustrates how Beowulf is now the king of the Geats, and the leader of their army.

3. (Line 1605) "Swung his great sword-blade with all his might and drove it home on the dragon's head. But Naegling broke, it failed in the battle". This shows how strong the dragon was, as its very skin broke a sword made of steel and metal.

When his speech is done, he lets out a fierce battle cry, and the breath of the dragon bursts out from the rock. Here, the two meet, and the battle begins.

";the breath of the serpent, A blast of venom, burst from the rock. The ground resounded; the lord of the Geats under the barrow swung up his shield to face the dragon" (1525-1529)

                          THE COMPANION

In this passage, Wiglaf demonstrates many characteristics that directly relate to characteristics that a figure with The Companion archetype would display. The Companion is a loyal follower who never leaves the Hero's side. Through each and every obstacle thrown at Beowulf and his men, Wiglaf persistently sticks by his side. While the dragon grew angrier and berated Beowulf with his countless attacks, Beowulfs fellow warriors turned and fled into the forest to save their lives. The only one that stayed behind with no doubt in his eyes was Wiglaf. Just as the passage states, "The call of kinship can never be stilled in the heart of a man who is trusty and true." (1560-1562) Wiglaf's loyalty was true to Beowulf to the very end and therefore his depiction of The Companion archetype was destinct.
