One way of trying to understand film genre is by thinking of genres as categories or groups, of which films that share common characteristics fit into. These common characteristics often include settings, stock characters, props and narrative. E.g.
Western:
Setting = Wild West, desert, cacti, hot
Stock characters = Cowboys, Indians, beautiful woman, settler
Props = Guns, lassoes, horses, cattle
Narrative = Conflict between Americans, Indians and settlers, resolved by a lone gunman

Genre: Romance

Setting = can be anywhere in the world, but often features Wintery snow scenes, sad scenes in the rain and happy, bubbly scenes in sunlit parks/meadows/gardens, hot make-out/sex scenes bedroom/hotel/holiday island etc.

Stock characters = Typically a lead (protagonist) (can be male or female, but usually the romance is from the female's POV and attracts a largely female target audience), the romantic interest (can also be the antagonist, but that can also be the people who try to stand in the way of the couples love).

Props = Cars, symbolic items (such as the apple in Twilight, diary holds the key to the story in Mama Mia).

Narrative = The lead female character falls for the interesting yet removed male character. He can seem aloof or distant and be hard to get. People and circumstances as well as the love interest himself can stand in the way of the relationship. The climax is a turn in the relationship where things are at their worst. Endings are usually happy and the lead character has the love she dreams of or the characters realise they'd rather be single and don't need a man. Sometimes it can be a happy-sad ending like in Me Before You, where the ending is very sad and she doesn't get the man, but she is happy in the end with her memories of him.

Genre: Docu-drama

Setting: Any setting or location based in real life. Historical or present-day. Often connected to events reported in the news that highlight the issues of the day.

Stock characters: Historical or real-life characters played by professional or amateur actors, or even playing themselves.

Props: Historically accurate or otherwise genuine items related to the real events being portrayed, or as similar as possible.

Narrative: Linear dramatisation of real events, possibly using an invented story-line to engage the audience in what would otherwise be reportage. Docu-drama can be very close to historical drama, but is usually connected to a single event.

Examples: Himalaya (1999), a tale of love and rivalry based on the annual trek made by the people of the Dolpopo region, Nepal, to sell salt. Why not call it historical fiction? Because it relates to the present-day.

The Thin Blue Line (1988), a dramatic re-enactment of the investigation of a police officer's murder in Dallas, Texas, which led to an innocent man being convicted. The film helped him overturn his conviction.
