All of the significant trauma happened when he was a kid. Charlie is a very quiet independent. He keeps to himself and was bullied when he was little. Growing up, his aunt helen babysat him and she was his favorite person. His aunt helen died in a car accident and after that, he has gotten bad anxiety, depression and blanks. He began experiencing symptoms, but he later found out that these symptoms were not because his aunt died and that's how he coped, but because when Charlie was little, he was molested by someone who he truly trusted and his favorite person, his aunt helen.

Why the author chose Charlie to communicate mental health awareness.

I think the author chose Charlie to communicate the mental health awareness issue because Charlie has been through a lot and throughout the book he has days where he gets really bad and feels like there is something wrong with him. It’s not a permanent change, because on some days he feels stable. During these moments when he gets bad, he says that he goes to this place and when he describes this mental place he goes to, he says “It gets to the point where nothing seems real anymore. This happens very fast, and things start to slip away. And I just open my eyes, and I see nothing. And then I start to breath really hard trying to see something, but I can’t.” When this happens, he doesn't remember what happens. Towards the end of the book, Charlie got a bad anxiety attack and had a blank. He ended up in the hospital and got help to make him stable.

Why it's important for people to know about Mental Health Awareness

It’s important for people to know about mental awareness because a mental illnesses affects 19% of the adult population, 46% of teenagers and 13% of children each year. Untreated mental illness can leave a person with poorer performance at school and work and increased risk of suicide. Learning more about mental awarness and knowing how to help a person who is struggling with a mental illness and helping them cope is a good way to help someone. Showing someone respect and acceptance removes a barrier to successfully coping with their illness. Having people see you as an individual and not as your illness can make the biggest difference for someone who is struggling with their mental health.
