Where in the World? by Ms. Renaud

Find 2 different items around your house that were not made in Canada. Where are they imported from? Do a little bit of research to find the answer if you're not sure. Pin each of them on the map - be sure to put your country, name, and the item in the title (i.e. Mexico - Ms. Renaud - Avocado).

In the description for each item, provide 4-5 sentences on what factors may influence the cost in producing these items if we were to buy locally (i.e. in Canada, we have to pay most employees a higher minimum wage which can create higher end costs). You will receive a grade out of 10 for this mini activity.

Pencil Case

The factors that may influence the cost in producing this item are the materials used. I have found that many items from china are made from a cheeper material, which would make the cost of producing the item cheeper. Employees in China will also work long hours for significantly cheeper then employees in Canada therefore items are made quicker. In Canada we have laws that ensure workers get paid a certain amount, in China there are not many laws enforcing equal pay therefore employers pay their workers low hourly pay. This leads to products being made for cheaper, and faster than products in Canada. If this product was made locally it would overall be a lot more expensive because of the time it would take to make, and the amount workers are paid in Canada.

This product is one of my favourite erasers; its one of the fancy, white ones. The quality is amazing and I've always had great experiences with this brand but I had no clue they were German! Here in Canada, I believe I bought the erasers in a pack of 2 at Staples for around $4. These erasers were most likely made in a factory where they also produce other school supplies. This company also makes items like pencils, office supplies and stationary. All of these items are relatively inexpensive to make. As well, the company only has around 3,000 employees, which is not that many. The average wage in Germany is 9.35 euro per hour.
If I were to buy these erasers locally, I would probably have to pay a few dollars more as the minimum wage in Canada has increased. As well, I would have to pay for the time and effort that a worker put in to create the erasers. We can see this in how local items are typically more expensive because they do not have large sources of revenue that factories would. Cmpared to some other European countries, living in Germany is not very expensive while living in Canada can be very pricey in the way of rent and groceries. This would also affect the prices of this products in regard to local or global sale.

China - Renee - Shirt
You see a lot of clothing being made in China because they are able to produce cheap (or high quality) clothes at a fast pace, for less money than North American brands. This allows big companies to earn more profit because they are paying less for more inventory. In contrast to Canada, it is a regulated law/rule that employers must pay their employees at least a certain minimum wage, as well as give them breaks, limit their labour and hours, etc. This makes the entire production process more expensive. With this being the situation, it costs companies more money to buy from Canadian production companies versus Chinese.

Item - Birkenstocks Shoes
I bought these shoes in Germany, and although they weren't imported. There are many differences between the costs in Canada compared to Germany. As the Birkenstock Brand is made in Germany, going to a factory where they are made; they are much cheaper. In Canada, they are typically over $120, whereas I bought mine for around $50CAD. Due to the brand being a big name, this influences the cost in Canada and importing prices. The cork used at the bottom of the shoe makes it easier to create a higher price for and the shoe design in itself. Due to the comfort of these shoes, that influences people wanting to buy them and have them last long. The importing costs and taxes put on these shoes to come to Canada is a strong reason why the cost is so high compared to Germany.

I got the bat in Louisville and I was able to get it customized for $100 as I got it in the factory. If i wanted to get that same bat in Canada, it would be $140. The reason being is, it would cost more money to package it and ship it to Canada whereas I got the bat right out the factory so they didn't have to go through the packaging process. The louisville bats cost is at an all time high right now as maple would is not being produced due to Covid-19.

My Aquafina hydrating lip balm is my all time favourite lip balm. They come in a variety of different flavours and they last all day long. I buy these in a pack of 2 at Dollarama for $2. These were made in the People's Republic of China which is just the formal name for the country of China. These are very cheap because they can be made in bulk in a factory. The factories do not have to pay their workers very much, the minimum wage is around 15-20 yuan per hour. This wage is very low; 1 yuan is only $0.19. You can typically buy lip balms for fairly cheap at most stores but buying local lip balms can be expensive; upwards of $6 per tub. This is understandable as the workers need to make a profit off of a product that is most definitely made with love and hard work. This lip balm is actually from the brand Aquafina, which is an off-shoot of the Pepsi brand. This brand makes billions of dollars each year off of drinks, advertisements, etc. It is easy for them to charge so little for a small product because they are making so much profit in other sections of the company. Having a large company could influence the cost of producing these items.

item - starbucks water cup and shirt.
As china has cheap worker wages it allows for big corporations like starbucks to make these products for cheap and then make good profits off of them. If big companies were to make these products locally it would cost them more to make in Canada as we pay employees a higher minimum wage. Which would lead to companies making less profit or consumers having to pay a much larger price for goods. Shirts and many clothes which are made in China are usually made in sweatshops which means they are able to produce a mass amount of clothing making the value of the clothing go down greatly. If clothing companies were to buy their products locally the price of the clothing item would go up greatly as here in Canada we have rules within our factories and often do not mass produce clothing items. Since more time and effort would be put into these clothing items if they were made locally the cost of them goes up greatly. I think that the world is truly globalized as many or almost all products which we use in our everyday lives were not made locally. I do believe that this creates a job inequality for people in Canada as many companies would rather make their products in different countries like China because of the cheap price.

If these speaker weren't made in Hungary and were instead made in Canada the would be even more expensive for the company to make the same amount of profit. Hungary's minimum wage in American dollars is around $5 compared to Canada's $10 so JBL would have to pay double the amount of money to employees so there speakers costs would have to double to make up for that lost profit from the wages. Another factor that may influence the cost in producing these shorts in Canada would be that the price to make them would increase if the materials have to be imported to Canada from somewhere else. This would increase the price of making the product as well as could increase the selling price to compensate for the money spent on importing the material(s).

The USA's minimum wage of $7.25 influenced the cost of the book to be more expensive than a book from a country with a lower minimum wage. The exchange rate on the item also increases the price.

Item - Jewelry
Getting locally made items from a country and a small business can change the cost of something extremely. In Greece, I bought locally made bracelets that costed little to nothing. Due to the fact that it is locally made with resources from Greece, buying it from there made the cost smaller. If the same jewelry were to come to Canada to be sold in a large business, the price would go up a lot. This could be due to pricing objectives, or demand for the product, also importation costs and the fact that the resources came from Greece.

I think a lot of them are transported to Canada from Vietnam because they do not have the same rules and regulations in their workplaces, therefore it is much cheaper to produce items at a faster pace. I think it would cost more to buy a stuffed animal that was made in Canada because we don't have nearly as many production plants for them. In Canada, it is not a common job to do this, and for the people that do work the job, their labour probably isn't as hard as those working in Vietnam for lower wages. Because of the cheaper production costs in Vietnam, it makes North American companies buy from them.

Canada sells American products because they have a much higher population, meaning there is a higher market for the product compared to Canada, but because there are taxes and the exchange rate gap, the prices are higher. Canada has a smaller population however, so there is a smaller market, which means the products may be not decrease in price enough to be the same amount Americans spend. Canadian wages are also higher than Americans, so they cost of the product must reflect on how many workers they have for the company. Canada also have more health laws, so they need the money to integrate these laws properly.

Factory workers in Cambodia make about $192 per month, while in Canada factory workers make around $2,500 per month. Therefore the cost of producing this item in Cambodia is significantly cheeper then if it was produced locally. Factories in Cambodia make items such as t-shirts in bulk because it is cheeper that way, then they export these goods to wealthier countries to make money off the items they made for cheep. Clothing that is made locally is more expensive to produce because workers are paid more, and Canada does not typically export clothing to other countries.

Other factors that may influence the cost in producing these items if we were to buy locally would be the import of materials to create this product like the frames, glass for the lenses, hinges, and details/products to make the details (logos, etc). Having to import all of these products, or materials to create these products, will ramp up the end cost of the glasses. If these materials came right from Canada/were made in Canada, there would be no importing cost, making the glasses much cheaper to produce, and therefore could lead to a cheaper selling amount. Lastly making these glasses and selling them in Canada allow for a little to no shipping rate. For example these glasses were made in Italy and have to be shipped elsewhere to be sold. If the glasses were produced and sold in Canada, there possibly wouldn't even be a shipping rate, allowing you to save money when it comes to the end cost.

It would be far more expensive in Canada, because in China plastic is a very commonly made product but in Canada it doesn't, so there may not be enough resources for Canada to produce water bottles on their own. If the product was only from Canada, they probably would use a different resource that may be more expensive because that is what we have in our country. The factory size would be smaller and the health and safety measure would be more strict and costly.

Vietnam- Maddisyn Spencer- Fan
In Vietnam the minimum wage is $5.24 per hour. so the cost to make the fan I have was probably extremely low, considering that they are barely paying people there anything to make it, the labour cost is extremely low, along with the production cost to make the fan. Whereas in Canada the cost of that fan would be more expensive because Canada's minimum wage is much higher than Vietnam's. In order to make a profit off the fan.

The items that I chose were my computer that I use for school and my table in my living room for IKEA! I think that by making these tables in China it is probably really cheap for the company and is going to bring the cost of their goods down rather than if they got them made locally. I think that also IKEA is such a big company by making them in China it is faster, and they can ship them to the stores in a more timely manner!

The wallet in my purse. This is also made from China and this is probably ideal to get the price of the item down and have more of them made at a better price. The quality might be a little on the cheaper side rather than if I got it made somewhere locally but for the company of my wallet that is ideal for them.

China - Jack Gesuale - Nike Running Shoes

One of my favourite pairs of running shoes was produced by Nike in China. After doing some research, I found that one of the primary reasons that companies choose to manufacture their products in China is due to their abundance of available lower-wage workers. Contrarily, Canada's minimum wage is far higher than China's, which leads to increased prices as the companies must generate more revenue to create profit, compared to companies in China who are able to pay their employees far less. Combined with a strong industrial infrastructure and lax regulation, items can be produced in China for a much lower cost than a country such as Canada. In addition, the business ecosystem of networked suppliers, component manufacturers, and distributors in China has changed over the years to allow for the country to become a more efficient and cost-effective location to manufacture products.

My custom-made, Ray-Ban sunglasses were manufactured in Thailand. Similar to China, items produced in Thailand are far cheaper than items produced in a country like Canada, due to their extremely low minimum wage. As seen in several instances, low labour costs typically results typically results in inexpensive items for purchase. It is likely that items will continue to be manufactured in China long-term, as their manufacturing sector has increased drastically over the last few years.
