It shows that his mental state is some kind of unstable, because he whispers her name and then pulls out the hammer in order to kill her or make her suffer. That shows that he has no kind of sympathy for the women who he decides to kill.

Looking at the quotes from the text the young man seems like a happy and smiling guy.
