One piece of text evidence is the scene where Catherine showed Jason the together card in chapter 17. She was trying to do her best at making Jason feel normal by making him communication cards and adapting to be able to be his friend. Although after she showed him the together card instead of Jason being happy he was angry. Other similar scenes like this are brought up in the story. So this is why I believe that "the decision to do your best may not always create the desired consequences or results" is the theme of the book.
