Nothing has been written about the origin of this peculiar tradition, since the documents kept in the Town Hall were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The oral tradition tells us two parallel stories to explain the origin of the devils of Almonacid, according to La Candelaria or San Blas:

As for the Virgin, the need to present Jesus as a child in the temple caused in Mary shame for the people who could observe her, because she did not know a man. And it is here where the devils find their place, with their noise of cowbells and strange clothing, attract the attention of the public, freeing the Virgin from the malicious looks of others.

For San Blas there is another totally different explanation: some shepherds found the image of San Blas buried in the place of the majanares, arising a dispute with the neighboring municipality of Puebla de Almenara, which the saint miraculously resolved in favor of Almonacid. The joy of the shepherds for these events was reflected in the sound of cowbells of their cattle, which hung behind their backs. To wash the saint's face they used brandy, the only thing they had on hand, a fact that is still remembered every year.
