Nothing has been written about the origin of this peculiar tradition, since the documents kept in the Town Hall were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The oral tradition tells us two parallel stories to explain the origin of the devils of Almonacid, according to La Candelaria or San Blas:
 
 As for the Virgin, the need to present Jesus as a child in the temple caused in Mary shame for the people who could observe her, because she did not know a man. And it is here where the devils find their place, with their noise of cowbells and strange clothing, attract the attention of the public, freeing the Virgin from the malicious looks of others.
