European nations attempted to influence Chinese Royalty and slowly take control of land within the nation.  They lost several wars to britian and france(making it weaker to stronger foreign nations.) The europeans began using china's resources such as timber and gold, but also had their eyes set on one of their most valuable resources, trading ports. Some nations allowed China to collect taxes on goods that were being traded in their ports to keep the Chinese happy, however many became outraged at what they believed to be a foreign invasion. They began a rebellion to get rid of any Europeans or foreigners from china. They were known as the righteous harmony fists(the boxers) The alliance ended the rebellion in September of 1901 and forced China to hand over more territory and pay $300 million for damages.
