My parents affected my ethical beliefs by making me think that I should always put academics before any other ethical value. As typical Asian parents, they made sure that I think that academics is very important and that it is the key to a successful future. Influenced by this idea, I now take academics as a more serious and crucial aspect of school, and I put this before other extracurricular activities or hangouts.

At Church, I was always told to be respectful to everyone no matter how well you know them or how much harm they caused on you. I grew up with those Church songs that say 'love everyone' so I hope to be respectful towards everyone. Since then, I believed in respect as a very important part in me.

I remember I used to have a really nice friend when I was in elementary school. She was always understanding and making sure that everyone was feeling comfortable within school in second grade. However, I was always getting irritated with petty matters and not very understanding of people. I soon noticed that everyone liked the friend since she was nice, and from then on, I made sure to always be nice to people in all situations - whether I'm asking for help, I'm the one giving help, etc. This makes me a better person overall.

Person on Street

One day, I was walking down the street when I noticed an old woman selling vegetables on the street in front of my hagwon. So I just entered the hagwon that day without much attention. The next day, she was still there, selling vegetables. The next next day, she was there. She was always there. She was always willing to take a chance everyday, persevering with her decisions to sell vegetables. I realized how important it is to be persistent, because I saw that she slowly seemed to sell more and more veggies(I thought that she was getting more customers) and this event made me reflect on my life and perseverance became a huge ethical belief I keep inside of myself.

Concert

A few months ago, I attended one of my first concerts because I got a free ticket to it. The event was extremely fun with a diverse range of songs and choreographies, until one scene came on the stage. The singer was supposed to completely fall on stage, with a structural box behind her, and a person to support her. If I were her, I probably never would have been able to do that, but I realized that the trust the singer had in the person below and the system for working properly was strong enough to outweigh the possible negative consequences. Realizing the importance of trust, I now try to keep my trust within people as much as possible.
